Getting worried with my toddlers lack of speech.

I have a 18 month old, he is smart in really brilliant ways like blowing his nose, combing his hair, throwing his diapers in the trash, dirty clothes in the hamper, things like that. But he is lacking in speech.. at one point he could easily say mamma, dada, no, stop, thank you, baba, look, papa, grama. Now he says stop, no, look, and it's good. I have tried to teach him things like more, please, thankyouu, and have tried to get him to say words he would frequently say before. It worries me. Though he is quite fluent in baby jiberish and like to pretend read to his animals. Is this something I should be worried about? His doctor said she should be able to identify facial body parts but he can't and refuses to sit down and try to learn.

Yeah I'd make another appointment with the doctor to get some referrals going for speech pathology, and check for any develomental issues going on.

I wouldn't be worried about his speech. He's not even 2 yet so he should be fine with that. My son is over two and still does not talk like a ton but when he does talk some things you can tell what he says and some you can't.

Don't worry yet. He still has a TON of time to start talking and still be on track developmentally.

My LO didn't say one single word till 18 months on the dot. Now at 2 1/2 I can't get her to shut up
He may just be quiet, or he is getting bored with you asking him the same questions a million times.

It is common for kids to stop using words they knew. My daughter did that. Should you actually be worried about where he's at? Probably not yet, but you should keep working with him and if he's still behind you might want to look into speech therapy later. It's really early to know, though. His speech could explode and surprise you.

My son went from talking to nothing at all. I was referred ti a specialist just before his 2nd birthday and he needed gromets, his ears were deaf because it hadnt been picked up on straight away. Soon as gromets were in he caught up so fast! Id make another appointment.

Thats what I was thinking, maybe I could start him with speech at 2 if he isn't improving. I mean it couldnt hurt.

The main reason I am concerned is he was doing so good with talking and making noises and now it's like I can ask him to say something and he attempts to say it but it comes out as jiberish

Brody is the same way!!! We just had his 18 month visit and the doc said its normal for boys to be delayed in speech also if they are excelling in their motor skills, problem solving and other skills to neglect their speech... Brody is hitting milestones of a 36 month old but only says b words like... Bye, bob bob (spongebob), boob and he says a few others... Don't worry momma (: he's doing just fine!
