Walking
posted 31st Jul '12
How can I encourage my daughter to walk. She is 16mos old, she was also born with a club foot and only 5 toes total. She walks up and down the couch, or if you hold her hand and help her.. She recently started doing the "monkey" crawl, you know hands and feet, but otherwise she just crawls everywhere.
I'm not really worried that she isn't walking yet, just wondering if there is anything I can do to encourage her to take steps on her own.
TIA

Does she have any sort of braces or altered shoes that she has to wear to walk (I was in braces until I was 7 and had a lift on my right show until I was 11, only reason I ask )

Has she gone to therapy or been given any walking devices?

She has a ponseti brace that she has to wear at naps and night time. And no, no physical therapy.

Her pediatrician will probably recommend PT once y'all decide it's time for her to walk more. I didn't start walking until about 18mo and only because the therapist told my Mom to walk away from me. It's sad, hearing a baby cry because they think you're leaving them, but it worked. Up until that point I had refused to do more than a couple of steps here or there. After that they started me on those exercise balls, not exactly sure why (I can't remember that far back lol).
