14 month old not walking yet :(

posted 31st Jul '12
I hear other parents talk about their toddlers & the things they do & it seems like my toddler doesn't do as much as them. He doesn't walk on his own yet, he needs to be held from one hand. He doesn't really speak either he just babbles. He says mama but not directly to me just randomly when he's playing. As well as Dada he doesn't really call out to dad he just says it. Those are the only words he says. He gives kiddy understands no & knows where his nose is. He points his finger when I ask him how old he is but that's about it. Mostly every toddler I know walks already & say more than 5 words. I don't work so I'm at home with his all day! & he's not advanced as he should be. I don't know what else to do. He's so active so he wont sit & repeat after me. Someone help! I need advice.. ASAP!

Don't compare him to other babies... they are all different. Just keep working with him. He will pick things up at his own pace.

There's no need to worry about walking until 18 or so months. My LO didn't walk until 16 months. But he's always been so smart, he's 3 now & his preschool teacher classified him as "well above" the average 3yr old. Don't worry, your LO will get it. Talking though, don't worry about that until 2yrs...
I know it's hard not to worry, but let your LO be a baby! they grow so quick as it is, no need to rush it.

Some kids just learn more slowly than others. My twins are a perfect example. DD has been walking independently since she was 9 months. She has a huge vocabulary and at age 2 she could hold a full conversation with you.

DS is a different story. He didn't walk until he was 12 months, and his speech is still not clear and he's 5. He's so active it's not funny. I sometimes wonder if he has ADHD.

Your son is mine exactly, except mine is 3. And OP, my son didn't walk independently until 15 months. He was cruising perfectly by 12 months but he was just too scared to let go. Every kid is different for sure. My friend's nephew is almost 18 months and still not walking.

My son didn't walk until 15 months, and you'd never know because now he literally runs everywhere! He is still behind on his speech, but goes to therapy and preschool. Try not to compare him to other kids (I know it is hard because you're concerned, I did the same thing). And if you are really concerned you can ask his pediatrician about it. Every child is different!

Sounds very similar to my 14 month old and I'm not worried. They're still young mama try to enjoy him while he's still not walking or talking back ;)

My two year old can tell you letter names and sounds of 20 out of 26 letters and know most of her numbers 1-10...but other than that her vocabulary is very limited and she doesnt speak but 4 or 5 two word, 3 word sentences like she should have done a long time ago. All kids learn at a different pace and comparing your child to other children will make you miserable. Most kids are advanced in some areas and slower in others, my child is 2 1/2 as of yesterday, I know 18 month olds in RL that have twice her vocabulary but are way behind her in problem solving and rationilizing, the range of normal is huge. I wouldn't worry, how are her fine motor skills? social skills?

I literally got that book about 2 days ago. I call him over & show him the pictures but when he crawls to me he points at pictures & crawls away. I know I shouldn't compare him, it only makes sense to me that he's at home with me all day he should be able to do a lot more things than other kids with working mommy's since they don't get to spend much time with them. I just can't help myself sometimes. I want him to be doing all these things, but maybe I should just not worry too much & enjoy him as he is now.
