Vision Exams

DS needs an eye exam before he starts school.
Can his pedi do that, or do we need to take him to an actual eye doctor?

He will have to see an eye doctor if it's for him needing glasses or something I believe. My son had to get seen by an opthamologist.

needs to see an eye doctor - pedi won't do that

Right now its just a basic exam, I'm assuming if his pedi can do it and he needs further or more in depth examination then his pedi can refer us to an opthamologist?

At my sons 3yr appt they did the exam where he stood on a line & said the shapes until the smallest one. They said he had 20/20 vision. So I'm assuming the pedi has some experience in it. I would call & ask.

I'm not sure if they are qualified to do a basic exam, but you can just have him seen, and then get a referral if you need to.

You are correct. The pedi just does basic exams. If you have an issue, then they send you over to an eye Dr.
We actually have to go see one since my son's left eye isn't as strong as the right.

i don't believe the pedi basic exam will qualify - I think it has to be done by an eye doctor or here they do preschool screening and examine ears and eyes officially among other things and that's all that's needed
