First time cooking sausage.

posted 31st Jul '12
Yes, I am almost 26, and never cooked sausage before. That having been said, I think I cooked them through. I hope, I just fed some to my kids and myself. I practically burnt the outside because I was so nervous. It's blackened on the outside, and inside is skin colored kind of. Definitely not bright pink, but not gray or white like some people say it should be. I just wanted your opinions on if I've just served under cooked sausage to my family. I checked theirs first, they looked okay... I think...

Most are pre cooked and so those you just heat up. Raw sausage will be pink and goopy in the inside. If it's black on the outside and grey in the middle you definitely cooked it enough!

Not sure, if it's not pink, it should be ok? Next time brown them and put a little bit of water in the pan and cover them and cook them through that way, that way they aren't blackened.

So, since I got it hot enough to blacken it, and it's not pink inside, I probably cooked them? It wasn't gooey inside either, it was kind of dry actually...

I boil them first, and then pan fry them after. There's no way of going wrong doing it this way. They will definitely be cooked.

For bbq'ing, I sometimes cut them in half so they cook through quickler. Or I leave them whole broil them for a few mintues then BBQ them. They should be firm inside and a tanish grayish color.

I'll remember that. I don't cook raw meat ever. Decided to try today. From what I'm hearing, I didn't just give us all food poisoning. So that's a plus. Lol

It sounds like you did fine. I almost always cut mine long ways in half and cook them on both inside and skinside. Or sometimes I make little bite sized pieces. Helps cook them super quick. You can also boil them.

lol next time cook on a lower heat setting so that it can cook thoroughly first without burning on the outside.

First, and last time, I ever tried to cook bacon I got so nervous I would serve it raw, I over cooked it into bacon bits. Lol, my sweet kids still ate it though, because I never cook. Hubby does. So when I do it they treat it like it's food from heaven or something. Lol

Yep it will be pink and kind of runny or gooey inside if it wasn't cooked.

OP it also helps when cooking sausage to put water in the bottom of the pan. Especially if they're frozen. This allows the sausage to stay moist and not to turn black. Once the moisture absorbs or dissolves usually I fry them to ensure they're cooked.

That way I don't have blackened sausage.

Yeah, they definitely didn't taste good. At least they weren't raw, that's one step closer. Next time I'll make them edible. Lol
