Child Support in BC From Father Who Just Started Work

posted 29th Jul '12
I live in British Columbia, and my ex (father of my son) JUST started working... My son is 5 months old and I have not gotten any money from his dad so far. Family Maintenance called and talked to me about 3 months ago and took down all my ex's info. I told them he didn't have a job at that moment. My mother said once he gets a job they will know and contact him to discuss the support. Well, I am kind of confused...How will they know he has started working...I feel like I need to call them and let them know but my mom is insisting that they will find out themselves. |It has been two weeks since he has started working and he said that no one has contacted him about it yet. Does anyone know how this all works? I tried searching it up didn't get an answer for what I need. Also, will the support pay be backed up? Will he have to pay for the last 5 months in bulk? Thanks!

You should definitely contact them and let them know he's began working. They will then tell him how much he needs to start paying and most likely set up a payment plan for the backpay he owes. It shouldnt have to be in bulk but like maybe an extra $50 on top of what he regularly owes until all the last 5 months has been paid off ya know?

The sooner you call the better. If he ends up not paying on his own then they should be able to garnish his wages and have money sent directly to you from his paychecks.

I have been dealing with Maintenance for 8 years now.
Its best to call with any info you have. I find they take a very long time to find things out them selves.
If you already have your child support order then yes there will be back pay, they dont reqire them to pay one lump sum but they will ask for a larger payment to go towards the back pay.
If he is willing he can call them as well or pay you directly and you report the payment to them.
