How do I tell them its not helpful?

posted 29th Jul '12
I'm so frustrated.
We are going through a really rough time financially. My husband lost his financial aid because of a small technicality, I am not receiving mine because my program is out for the summer, and his job is making about a third of what we thought it would.

Luckily, his parents are helping. The only issue is, they keep buying us food. Which- I should be grateful for, right? Except we are vegetarian/bordering on vegan...and they keep spending obscene amounts of money on stuff that we either don't eat, that my daughter hates, or just in such big amounts that half is wasted. I don't know how to ask them to stop without sounding ungrateful...but its frustrating that they are wasting their money. If they want to gift us food, it would be SO helpful to give food store cards or something..but food is such a personal thing, it doesn't make sense for them to do our shopping for us.

I love them so much, and appreciate all of their help. Not sure what to do here.

Maybe ask if you could go with them so as to get the right amount and what not so you aren't wasting their money with the food that gets wasted

Tell them the food is being wasted cuz you don't eat that.

What was the technicality he lost his financial aid for if you don't mind me asking? I'm losing mine after fall.

Since its his parents, maybe he should have a word to them, just saying he really appreciates all their help but by giving store cards instead it would save them money

I would make an offhand comment on how you miss food shopping and taking your time looking thru the aisles and seeing what is new...
Maybe they would get the hint and give you a gift card? Otherwise, can you return some of the stuff? Like the meats?

Tell them you are so grateful for their help, but you don't want their efforts to be wasted since you don't eat meat. Maybe instead of doing something so bold as asking for food store gift cards, tell them what would not go to waste in your house.

He failed one unit out of 14. He was on probation because he accrued too many units BEFORE getting on financial aid. Its nuts...i'm pretty pissed.

I hate the way they do the whole unit thing. I'm being cut off in fall because as of fall semester I'll have 80 units but still one semester away from graduating   They only allow up to 72 units.

Units? Do you mean credits? I am confused.

They don't buy meat at least. Its just other stuff- fertilized eggs, stuff with gelatin, stuff with tons of chemicals and sugar. And then the stuff that we do eat (fresh fruits and veggies for instance) they buy tons of- way more than we can eat.
It may sound picky, but I've been doing my own shopping and cooking for years, and I care a lot about what goes into my body (especially since I'm breastfeeding) and my daughter's body. I don't think I can return it without a receipt though...
plus, it would feel sneaky. and they'd still be wasting their time too- which I don't think is fair to them either.
