Problems with pediasure

posted 29th Jul '12
I have a question. My son has been drinking pediasure for his meals when he will not eat. He has autism and is very oral defensive so we have a hard time getting him to eat. Recently he has been eating a few more foods than he used to so we are trying to get him to eat more and have pediasure less. The problem is he is getting where he wants pediasure with his food. He will scream and have a huge meltdown every single time because we refuse to let him have a pediasure until he at least tries to eat. He does this at every meal. Any ideas on how to help with this would be great? I considered just getting rid of pediasure altogether now that he is eating better but I need to discuss it with his doctor first.

There is a limit. It's 3. That's all i give him but i don't think he needs to eat plus have pediasure. He is on it because he wasn't eating.

My DD has been slower with her growth - she's 5 and only weighs 31 pounds - so we do Pediasure to help her gain weight.

She loves chocolate milk, so we buy the chocolate ones. She drinks one whole Pediasure a day. She has half with breakfast and half with dinner. I mix half Pediasure and half whole milk. She doesn't know the difference.

They have him on it for the nutrients. I think I will try mixing it with his chocolate milk though. I did not know you could do that.

Yep. Her pediatric dietitian suggested it. She also said to give her 1/2 of a children's Tums everyday with her regular vitamin for extra calcium.

She's a suuuuuuper picky eater too.

I can completely relate to you! Exact same issue with my son, he's 6 now but this happened when he just turned 5. For about a week I would still give him the pedisure with his meals, I saved the used bottles. After a week I would put strawberry or chocolate milk in the bottles I saved in the morning before he would wake up. He would have the milk with his meals. We did that for almost a month, then one day not during meal time he asked me for water but he wanted it in the pediasure bottle. Apparently he became attached to the bottles since for awhile that's what he was using for meals. That's a big issue with him, attachment. You never know what he will attach to and what problem may arise from it. I wish you the best of luck mama, I know it can be hard sometimes.

We had the same problem, but jamil
Is very logical and I told him it's a breakfast and he can only have it at breakfast, that worked ((plus putting it out of sight))

My son had this same issue. I found it was the Pedisure bottles for him as well. I would give him chocolate milk instead in the bottles and he was just fine. He STILL drinks about a gallon of milk a day though. Trying to cut him down but he does not eat very well still. He only eats cubed fruit and baby food. He is 7. It is really hard to get him to eat and he simply does not know how to chew. We are trying though.

There are no limits on how many pedia sures a day a child can consume.
taken from this website: http://pediasure.com/FAQ
In general, there is not a limit on the amount of PediaSure that a child can safely consume. For an individual child, the amount of PediaSure that is needed — or is acceptable — on a daily basis should be discussed with the child's health care professional. If the child is eating foods and drinking other beverages, it is especially important to determine how much PediaSure would be appropriate in the context of the overall diet.
