Quoting Mr. Ant:" <blockquote><b>Quoting chaaaaaaass.:</b>" What should a 2 and a half year old be able ... [snip!] ... and shapes/colors would be enough. Don't they give you a list of what they recommend the child know before starting school?"

Yeah, but it's the same bullsmurf that we hear at 6 months old, like the bare minimum of what any regular functioning child should be able to do, just to make sure there isn't any underlying issues KWIM?

Ah, the list for Kindergarten here is so detailed, it's not funny.

I think some good advice has been given, so I don't have anything else to add to it. But I will watch this thread, to use these ideas myself.

And really, we kept "school" fun at 3. This was us having school on Dr. Seuss's birthday..(One Fish, Two Fish...)

Steal away! I also wrote a "K" and she had to line the goldfish up on it before she could eat them. School + food is always a success in our house.

My son started nursery at the age of 3. He's now 4 and in his second year at nursery. And OMG the lists of expectations some people's writtens made me reconsider the nursery teachers reports on his 'brilliant' progress. As Kyle prefers building things and doing jigsaws and rarely goes to the drawing/painting table (they have freedom of choice). Kyle can do jigsaws that's aimed for 6 yr olds. But still gets colours mixed up. Only really does circles for 'writing'. Still prefers to scribble although only starts that when he's bored of the picture. He won't trace letters for me no matter how 'fun' I make it. Recognises 'some' words - mainly his name, his brothers name, mum, dad, happy birthday and nana. He can draw shapes if you draw them first. Can name a fair few. As I said he prefers to build things like Lego models, stacking bricks etc. His speech is very very clear and you'd think he was older. He can count to 20 - but misses out number 14. He knows about healthy eating (they start that in nursery) and the importance of teeth brushing. He can hold a pencil/paint brush but gets bored of using them. He can draw people and does put detail in like their fingers, eyes, nose etc

Yet according to many here - he's very very behind in his learning development. I'll have to raise concerns with the nursery after the summer holidays.

All of that? I don't think so.

Thank god I wasn't the only one who was gobsmacked at the expectations!! I actually got quite concerned over it. But meh my health visitor has no concerns so I'll just continue as I am. Lol
