Low Amniotic Fluid...Please help!

posted 14th May
So today I went for my monthly check-up (I'm 22 weeks 5 days) and got the results of my sonogram. Though Julian is growing perfectly, I was told that there is a possibility I may have a low amount of amniotic fluid. I'm going crazy and getting so stressed. I read about it and it says he could have kidney problems, urinary tract problems, placenta complications...a number of things. None of them good.

Has this happened to any of you women and what was the outcome?

its not considered low until your level is a 5 ......mine stay around a 7-8.... just make sure you drink lots of water..try to avoid caffine it does not help you!!!

after my first fetal anatomy ultrasound they said they thought I might have low amniotic fluid. I went crazy just like you did. I googled it, read about all the horrible things it might be and cried. When I went to another ultrasound for them to see.....the tech said she had no idea what the other tech was looking at, and that I had plenty of amniotic fluid. Dont stress. Keep yourself hydrated, you'll be fine!

Exactly what I'm doing! It's not helping either. It's only stressing me out more. I can't stop thinking about the bad. I've increased my water intake and I'm praying. That's all I can do. Hopefully when I go for another ultrasound, he'll be fine.

Wow, dejavu! i had the same thing and i was freaking out reading all the horrible things that could be wrong with my baby! Mydoctor sent me to a specialist 2 hours away for another ultrasound and that doc said he didn't even know why they were measuring it right away since you usually can't get an accurate measurement till at least 24 weeks, but i went back and they said that everything looked great! Please don't freak yourself out even though it seems impossible, just drink plenty of fluids and relax.

My cousin had low aminotic fluid at 22-24 weeks like you and they just watched her and told her to stay off her feet and drink plenty of water. However, I had low fluid at 35 weeks and I went in to be induced becuase I was far enough along. The doc told me that if I had been 25 weeks instead of 35 weeks that they would just watch my fluid levels closely but b/c I was farther along the risk was greater to leave her in. Just drink plenty of water not caffeine drinks and listen to the doc.

Oh I didn't know they were supposed to wait until then. Hmm...well you eased my mind ALOT!

I kind of wish this would have happened when I was farther along. I have 17 weeks before he's even due and it's VERY stressful. I'm sure things could be worse but I'll just keep praying that he'll be ok.

P.S. You're due on my birthday! Congrats! =]

Yeah, i know exactly how you feel. I went through a freak out where i didn't want to get attached to the baby b/c if something was wrong i didn't want to hurt as bad. I got myself so worked up, so just try to relax even though it is hard. My doctor said in his entire practice that he has only seen one person lose their baby due to low fluid, it is extremely uncommon. Just try to take it easy and keep off your feet. I just went back to the specialist last week to check on the fluid again and he said that everything is perfect and until about 26 weeks, they can't get an accurate measurement of the fluid b/c there are supposed to be 4 quadrants of fluid they measure and at 22 weeks there is only 2 quadrants that they can see and measure so of course it will look low. If you need to talk more, you can PM me and i'll be happy to talk. Just take care and keep us updated.

At my 20 week appointment with my youngest my fluid was pretty low and I was diagnosed with oligohydramnios (low fluid). I had to go to a perinatologist once a month and in the last few months I had to go to the hospital every two weeks for an NST and u/s until I delivered. Sometime around 28 weeks my fluid went back up and I could stop going to the perinatologist. I went crazy and the stuff I found on the internet just mad matters worse. Dellana was born June 22, 2007 a perfectly healthy baby and is now a very healthy little girl. They never did figure out why it was low, it just was. Drink plenty of fluids and rest as much as you can...I'm sure your little one will be fine. This time it was a little low too at my 17 week u/s, but the next month was up to normal. If you need to talk I'm here.

Thank you so much for your support. I feel so bad for the one person who lost her child but in a way, it's a good thing because it isn't that common. I'm not saying in won't happen to me but it does ease my mind. I drank a good 80 ozs of water today. Not on purpose, I've just been VERY thirsty. So I guess that's a good thing. Looks like I'll have to tell my job since I've been working 12 hour days, 6 days a week. I just can't be on my feet like that anymore. My child's health comes before $7.50. Once again, I thank you so much! I will be sure to let you ladies know what goes on in the coming weeks.

I ADORE YOU ALL! =]

You just gave me SO MUCH hope. I'm so glad to hear that your baby girl is healthy and I pray the same goes for mine. Thank you for your support and letting me talk to you. I'm hoping if I do have oligohydamnios that my doctor keeps as good an eye on me as yours did.

THANK YOU!

I hope everything goes fine (and I'm sure it will). I worked with this girl who, when she was pregnant with her son, had severe oligohydramnios. It was to the point that they told her her son was gonna die and there was nothing they could do. Well, she switched doctors and her new doctor put her on bedrest. Turns out her problem was just that she worked entirely too much. She gave birth to a very healthy baby boy who is now 3 or 4 I believe. Caffiene, soda intake, stress, working too much, smoking, etc can effect the fluid levels. I'll keep you and your baby in my prayers though.

That's amazing! Congrats to her! =] Thank you for your prayers. That's the best thing anyone could do for me right now. I'm not sure when I go get another u/s but I will keep you ladies updated and let you know how me and Julian do.
