I hate being treated differently.

posted 28th Jul '12
I know this is going to sound silly to some but I hate being treated like people think I should be an awful mom because I am a teen.
Like yesterday, I posted a picture of me & my 8 month old of doing an art project.
People acted suprised that I did that with him, they were like "Wow, you are an awesome teenage mommy." and I am like why can't I just be a mom? Why do I have to be a good "teenage mom"? I'm sorry if this doesn't make sense I am just agrivated.

I just don't like to consider myself a teen mom because everyone assumes that I live on welfare & don't take care of my son. Idk it just annoys me that people just think I am supossed to be a horrible mom..

I understand what you mean. I am 26 and III get comments like that. Sadly, I think it's become the norm- that people just do not see enough hands on parenting today because so many young parents leave their children with grandparents, to go off and party. It is VERY common. I would suggest taking it as a positive praise instead? Teaching your child and spending time together is incredible and it is awesome of you!

People judged me a lot with my daughter. Labor and delivery never told me anything. They looked at my mom when telling me what was happening with my child. My water broke at 29 weeks.. And I spent weeks in the hospital before delivering, with nurses that treated me like crap. Once I had her though, the nicu team was amazing. They always gave me so much credit for being so involved with what was going on. It felt nice, until we were discharged and I was the "kid" carrying around a baby.

Yeah luckily I knew most of the nurses so they were awesome. Yeah someone came up to me at a WIC appointment and looked at my mom and I am sorry you are going to have to raise another child when you thought you were done. WTF? Who says stuff like that?

But youre not! Thats the best think you can do, is show them that you are taking care of your son and doing the right things. teenager or not, youre a mother and a good one.

It's unfortunate but at least you think the way you do. SO is older than me and had a son before we were together. Then his ex had another son. I was playing with the three of them on the playground one day, you should have seen the looks I was getting.

Good for you for being a good mother, teen or otherwise. Your child doesn't know that you're a young mother, nor does he care. All that matters to him is that you take care of him. Keep on doing what you're doing and ignore all the negativity. Those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind.

Thank you. I just don't get why I can't just be an awesome mom, why I have to be a awesome teen mom? I don't get why it agrivates me so much, it just does I can't help it.

I'm not a teen anymore, but I have 3 step-children and the oldest is 8, 14 years younger than me and I definitely don't look older than I am, so when people see me walking around with 4 kids, one that's 8 and one of them obviously coming from a different father (SO is Hispanic and my son from another relationship is blond haired blue eyed) I get nasty or "pity" looks ALL the freakin time, it annoys the crap out of me.

People don't know your situation and shouldn't have anything to say - but in this case, I would maybe look at it as a positive and know your doing it right. Don't let it get to you TOO badly.
