Should we raise minimum wage?

posted 28th Jul '12
Do you think we should raise minimum wage? I was watching a documentary about minimum wage (Morgan Spurlock), and it is damn near impossible to live off minimum wage.

Should it be raised to a more "livable" wage?

ETA: What would you make the minimum wage in your state?

I think so. I wouldn't be able to live for smurf if I was only getting paid minimum wage.

yes, the cost of living keeps going up, but the minimum wage does not.

YES.
It really is damn near impossible to live off of anything less than $10 an hour for a single person. When I lived in Florida, I remember reading an article that stated you needed to be making $15/hr to make a sufficient living if it's just you (no spouse, no kids, no other dependents)

I'm a single mom making minimum wage, it's impossible. My parents have to help me.

I would like to hear from the people who voted no. I am curious.

On one hand, I do not think minimum wage is enough to live on at all - but on the other hand, I would rather fix the economy and make it more livable without having to raise the amount - that's wishful thinking, though, so raising the minimum wage would more than likely be the more immediate solution.

No, because if that goes up, then so does everything else to even out.

Minimum wage should continue rising like the cost of living but companies dont want to pay smurf like that. I mean there are people trying their damnedest to take of themselves without the government and smurf but it is nearly impossible with their wages.

It wouldn't matter for us. So is an electrician and his pay wouldn't be effected. So he has to work 56 hrs a week to keep us comfortable.

If minimum wage went up with inflation, it would be about $11 an hour

Quoting Jessica™:" No, because if that goes up, then so does everything else to even out."

Everything else is continuing to go up, regardless of what the US Federal Minimum Wage is at the present moment. Nothing is even now, everything is completely out of whack and the American Dream has long since died with the rising costs of living. Why NOT raise it at the risk of living prices continuing to rocket into the atmosphere? At least then the lower working class has a fighting chance to survive.

Min wage in my state should be at least 15 bucks an hr.

But Ill be reasonable and say 10. Everything is increased by a significant percentage every year here rent , public transportation you name it.

Pretty much. I don't want to pay even more for food, gas, everything.

YES. I work 40hrs a week, no lunch breaks and might make enough to pay rent if we lived in the slumps. Minimum wage is $7.25 an hr here, use to be $6.25.
