breastfeeding help

posted 28th Jul '12
I had my son 8 days ago, and went through the horrible engorgement stage. I nurse and nurse him it seems like, but he doesn't seem like he is getting enough. I have had a lot of trouble keeping food in me, mainly greasy food. I started having that trouble whenever i was 8 months pregnant. So i feel like i might be drying up because where everything i eat basically runs straight through me. So what do i need to do to make sure i am going to continue to produce breast milk for my son. I would really hate to stop nursing, we have such an incredible bond, and seems like its actually helping to keep the depression to a minimum. So what do i need to do, obviously i need to see a doctor about my problem with keeping food in me, but i would like some tips on keeping my supply up.

I nurse him about every 2 1/2 to 3 hours.

just drink lots and lots of water. and try avoiding greasy food, if you think that is a problem. If he is having wets/stools then he is getting plenty. good luck, dont give up!

1/2 cup (1 stick) softened butter/margarine
1 cup white sugar
1 cup + 2 Tbsp brown sugar
1.5 cup peanut butter
3 eggs (room temp)
1 tsp vanilla
2 tsp baking soda
2 Tbsp brewer's yeast (not regular yeast- brewer's can be found at any health food store)
2 Tbsp flaxmeal soaking in 4tsp warm water (Publix and Walmart sell this)
3 3/4 cup old fashioned oats (for a huge impact use steel cut, but texture wise is better with rolled)
1 bag of butterscotch chips OR 1 medium bag of M&Ms OR 1 bag of chocolate chips
  • Preheat oven to 325
  • Soak flaxmeal in warm water
  • Mix butter, white sugar, and brown sugar with electric mixer until creamy.
  • Add eggs one at a time, mixing until creamy after each addition
  • Add vanilla
  • Add peanut butter and mix until creamy
  • Sprinkle baking soda and brewer's yeast, and also add moistened flax- mix well.
  • Add oats and mix until oats are well-coated.
  • Add chocolate chips and mix well.
  • Scoop onto ungreased sheet, allowing 2" between scoops. Press 4-5 M&Ms into each cookie.
  • Bake 15-18min

Yield: 5 dozen cookies.

Make sure to eat healthy and keep hydrated and nurse on demand. And as long as he is having enough wet and dirty diapers everything should be fine. Both my boys nursed basically 24/7 for the first 2 months of their lives.

Try avoiding the greasy foods, but go get checked my your dr. Greasy foods giving your diarrhea is a common symptoms of gallbladder issues, and gallbladder issues tend to start up in relation to a pregnancy lol.

Is he peeing/pooping? If he gaining? Are your breasts more "empty" feeling after he nurses?

If the answers are yes then you are doing just fine. don't stress. Eat as healthy as you can... fruits and veggies, lots of water, and plenty of protein.

Good snacks: Cheese and crackers, almonds or walnuts, a fruit and nut granola bar, peanut butter and apple slices or celery.

My momma told me to drink decaffeinated tea because my milk wasn't coming in at all... I drank two glasses of iced tea yesterday and my boobs grew two sizes I swear... I have to pump before and after baby eats...there's soooo much.... ~.~ Coincidence? Maybe... I dunno... but I'm going to say it was the tea. ;)

Lots of protein too... I heard tuna is good for helping make more milk too... but ick! I hate tuna... lol

Thanks everyone for the tips. We went to his doctor, and he's not gaining fast enough, so his doctor told to pump and feed him that way. Also his jaundice was really high too, 14.6 is what the doctor said, and 15 is when they admit them here.

Where i have breastfed him for as long as i have [which technically isn't long at all.] he's isn't wanting to take a bottle from me, from his dad, yes, but whenever i have him he works his way down to where my breast is, which makes me feel bad, so usually just try to nurse him whenever i have him and just let his dad to bottles. So he should be gaining weight.

The way his doctor talked, if he isn't his birth weight by tomorrow then i will probably have to switch to formula, which i don't want to at all. I guess if i'm not getting enough nutrients in me that would make since why he isn't gaining any weight back. So i am pretty worried about that also. =/

You don't have to switch completely. You could always supplement with formula.
