School clothes shopping Q
posted 27th Jul '12
My daughter won't be going through this any time soon (she doesn't start school until she's almost 6 because she's past the cut off, so 2 years) but another post made me think... If you have an older kid (maybe like 7 or 8+), how much do you spend on school clothes shopping?
I remember when I was a kid, my mom would take me to Walmart and give me like a hundred dollars to pick out the clothes I wanted, but made sure I got _ # of pants, shirts, a pair of shoes etc. Then from the age of 13+ she would literally give me like $200 to go to the mall and get whatever I wanted... I'd go shopping with my friends and just buy random clothes. Looking back now I'm like smurf, that was SO much money. I was a spoiled smurf lol!
Do you have any rules on how you're gonna do school shopping with your kid? What about when they're teenagers?

Right now, we don't do any special shopping before school aside from a pair of shoes. They start the school year in the tees and shorts I bought when spring hit. For fall, I'll check to see how their pants from last year fit and if they still do, then they'll wear those. Same with long sleeved shirts. They'll each get a pair of boots then. Then for winter, we'll see what fits from our snow gear and fill in as necessary. When they're older, I can see doing a back to school shopping trip for new clothes but for now, they just don't care what they wear.

DD is going into grade one and I dont spend that much. I go through her clothes and see what she needs.
Last year I only bought one outfit for the first day, and a pair of shoes, some socks and undies, she already had enough.
This year Ill probly just get her 2 pairs of shoes some more underwear and socks and maybe two shirts and pair of pants.
I can get away with being cheap now, lol But I know it will be a pain in the ass when she gets to the age where her friends clothes influance what she wants to wear.

I spend around 300 for my oldest, but they have to wear special uniforms here. That usually includes uniforms, shoes, socks, undies, school supplies, etc. for my 4 year old i'm reserving 150.00 for him. This will be his first year in uniforms if I send him to school with his sister instead of head start.

I thought we had lucked out in having boys, but boy was I wrong! They're so picky and particular. We spend about 500 on clothes for the two of them, plus shoes. Their mother also spends about the same. School supplies are another 50-100.

My kid is starting Kindergarten at home this year (online charter school) so no need for school shopping! lol. But we usually just buy him clothes throughout the year...and if he was starting school I'd just get him a couple outfits. The kid has enough clothes and shoes now to last the year if he doesn't grow lol. I think when I started school before I had a job, I'd get 2-3 outfits and a few undergarments and a pair of shoes...when I turned 16 and I got a job, I bought all my own clothes.

I don't just go on one massive school clothes shopping trip. I literally pick up things here and there all year long. Same goes for Christmas. If I waited to do it all at once I'd be a broke person for sure.

I shop sales and dont spend a lot, actually. I buy end of season sales from Kohls and the Childrens Place (sometimes other places) and get things DIRT freaking cheap. I have a Christmas dress that was an online Kohls exclusive for almost 200, returned to the store and we bought it for 10. We buy end of the season tank tops for less than 2 bucks a piece that were on average 12-20 a piece. We get pants that are versatile to wear under dresses or with just shirts for less than 3 bucks. We pay no more than 5 bucks for an outfit set. My daughters clothes average about full-price 15-20 bucks an item, and we typically dont spend more than 3 bucks a piece for it, no joke. Even Winter jackets. We bought the next 3 years jackets, including a 150 dollar leather jacket for 20 bucks. The only thing we really buy spur of the moment and full-price are undies and socks. We even buy shoes on clearance. Seriously... go to those stores and buy the end of the season clothes for next season/next year.

Thats ok...when I did not have the money to spend I was cheap too. My 10 yr old lived through the cheap days lol
It took alot of working and saving up money to have money to spend and splurge...but they are set for the whole yr..unless something breaks or they grow out of them lol

My son is only going into pre K. Its still warm here in sept, and his summer clothes are still in great condition along with his crocs so he will wear them as long as he can. When it starts getting cooler here I will go threw his stuff from last year jeans and shirts and stuff and see what fits and what I need to get more of. Same with shoes I will buy him 2 pairs of shoes but I wait til it gets cooler prob end of sept to buy him his shoes. I will prob spend about $50-$75 on clothes I think he will have alot he can still wear from last year, and shoes prob 60-75 bucks on a good pair of shoes and a pair of play shoes. I dont have to have name brands but shoes I dont mess around with I want my son to have a good pair of shoes for his growing feet. As far as school supplies he is in Pre K so no supplies except a back pack and I bought him a personalized LLBean back pack last year for nursery school, it has a life time guarantee or some crap, he will use that one as long as he can ( I had an LL bean back pack I got it in 2nd grade and used the same one from 2nd grade to college! they are the best!!!)
As for my self when I was younger, my mom didnt ever set a limit I dont think on back to school , she would get all the supplies I needed for school then take me to the mall and get me a bunch of clothes/shoes. I remember in highschool I would go out with my friends school shopping and she would give me her credit card to use. I wanna say a ballpark number was 500 on school clothes?
