The Madeline debate (lynn pronounciation)

posted 27th Jul '12
My husband and I have had our hearts set on the girl name Madeline for so long the problem is we want it to be pronounced Mad-a-lin/lynn and Madeline is my favorite spelling , but looks like it would be pronounced Mad-a-line not Lynn then there is the Madelyn spelling which looks like it would get pronounced how I want it , but also looks a little trendy and just off to me and the only other spelling I would consider is the French spelling Madeleine , but would that be pronounced like Mad-a-line too? Can you please comment and tell me which spelling you like best for the Lynn pronunciation and also can anyone who has a daughter named Madeline tell me if they pronounce it Mad-a-Lynn and whether it gets pronounced wrong alot? And does Madelyn look trendy to you? Please help.also could you tell me how you would pronounced each one

Madeline and Madeleine sound the same with a line at the end

Madelyn I wouldn't ever pronounce with a line it would be lyn.

Madelyn would give the sound you are looking for. Majority of people would still read Madeleine as line. Madelyn doesn't look trendy to me. It's spelled that way for a reason

I would spell it Madeline if I was to use it. My cousin's daughter is Madeline and we all say it Mad-uh-lynn. I think that's how most people pronounce it.

Madelyn has Greek origins, Madeline has Hebrew origins and Madeleine is French. It really depends on which way you want to go. Pretty much no one is going to call your kid Mad-e-line unless you specify that is the way it is pronounced. Mad-uh-lynn is the default until told otherwise.

My DD's middle name is Madelyn, and I hate it but that is neither here nor there.

I adore Madeleine - it's French and pronounced mad-ah-lehn.

Madeline is mad-ah-leen, mad-ah-line or mad-a-lyn.

Madelyn is a hot trendy mess, don't do it, it looks tacky - it's not Greek, sorry, it's just an Americanized spelling of Madeline / Madeleine.

They all come from Magdalene, which refers to the Mary Magdalene in the Bible.

Madeleine is my favorite, Madeline is basically correct with any of the pronunciations, you will have to tell people which one to use, but it's not difficult and people will catch on. I'm Cassandra and people say kah-son-dra all the time and that's not how I pronounce it. I just say it once, they get it and we move on, no big deal.

I have a niece that's names Madeleine. And we pronounce it mad-uh-lynn. Spell it however you want. If you say it the way your want it pronounced they will pronounce it that way.

This is a name where I'd definitely spell it phonetically correctly rather than worry about what's actually correct. (I'd be more concerned about it being mispronounced all the time than I would about someone thinking I was "trendy".. and no one in the real world is going to think that).

Fortunately Madalyn and Madelyn are correct spelling options (even if they are Americanized), so even if you're concerned about it being an incorrect variation, it isn't, so you're alright.

But I would pronounced the other two as Mad-uh-line.. even if they can be pronounced differently, I wouldn't. When I read it, I see Mad-uh-line.

My daughters name is Madelynn- not spelled correctly as you can see but I was dealing with the same issue as you. I didnt want just lyn because for some reason maddies name was really popular the year she was born lmao but I wish I would take her spelling back to the original Madeline....you cannot find anything in stores it has to be premade
