3.5 and gymnastics

posted 26th Jul '12
So this week we are going to check out a few gyms in our area. I want to put my 3.5 year old in gymnastics but I am unsure of what to expect. Can someone fill me in.

For those of you who have had children in gymnastics since a young age....
What age did you put your LO in?
When did they start to acquire skills?
How many times a week did you have class?
Did you pay for extra gym time?
About how much did it cost you a session? And how long were the sessions?

Since my LO is only 14 months, I can't tell you about her. But I was in gymnastics at a young age. I practiced about 3-4 times a week at age 4/5. I uped my days as I got older then it went to a full time thing until I broke my ankle and knee. The price, couldn't tell you. Just look around and ask questions at local gyms. I kow my mom paid extra for private lessons and extra classes. I picked up stuff fast, but all kids are different. I was also into dance too. So I was a busy kid/teenager.

It's like $50 per class in our area. For 30 minutes sessions 1-2 times per week. I think it's per month, but I don't remember.

I'm going to put Nat in gymnastics probably after her birthday in december.

Sorry ladies I didn't think anyone would respond to this so I never came back to check.

We ended up doing a week of gym trials and chose a really nice gym. It ended up being 185 for 13 weeks and a 45 dollar registration fee. We have been going to open gym as well. She picked up really fast during the gym trials and each gym said they could tell she would most likely turn into a competitive kid.

There were some gyms that we absolutely didn't like. It seemed like play time.

It's ok, I understand.

Shopping for a gym is HARD.

Have you started looking into them yet?

We really only have one in Vancouver, none obviously in Battle Ground. Jacob said he wanted to start going so we're going to open gym at the VEGA North.

I'll let you know.

That's awesome. I really like open gym. It's unstructured but it helps them get a feel for the gym.

Because our gym is a branch off from another city, they didn't have open gym on Thursdays, only on Tuesdays. There's another gym in Vancouver, but the website is vague.

We could go tomorrow but my mother is coming and so we're taking the kids to the zoo tomorrow. So it sucks. Jacob was super upset. We ended up going to a kids play area but the doctor upped his meds and now he's super emotional and he "got lost" and "couldn't find a way out" and "couldn't find mommy" so he was bawling. I had told him I was taking Nat to the bathroom...

Poor guy. He cries when the wind blows to hard...

my LO started at about 20 months (I started her as soon as possible lol). her session is once a week for 45 minutes a time. For a 5 week session it's roughly 40 dollars. I also live in a rural area so everything is much cheaper. They have open gym a couple times a week and I think it's 5 dollars a time. I don't do that yet with my LO since she's so young. My daughter just turned 2 and has definitely learned things and is more comfortable on the equipment, but she definitely hasn't acquired any real gymnastics skills lol.

Aww poor guy.   I hope he can adjust. Will he adjust to the meds?

He's off the crying train and onto the beating up people train again.

I'm waiting till school starts. I want to see if he can succeed in school before dropping him off his meds and lowering them

That must be so rough for you and him. Aside from this med change and his emotional roller coaster, do things seem to be getting better with him?

Yes. He's doing a lot better. I should post an update on him I haven't in so long. He touched a caterpillar yesterday. Actually tried to pick it up while my OCD is going rampid like, "DON'T TOUCH THAT THING!"
