Am I potty training too early?

posted 26th Jul '12
I think I made a mistake trying to potty train her right now. She's 14 months old and she's peed in it a couple times and pooped on the big potty once. But it's not usually by choice. I have to put her on it after she already started peeing on the floor. And its so discouraging with her peeing on everything. The smallest size training pants I can find are 2T and she's too small for them. So she has to go around naked or peeing through her pants. I'm trying to stay positive about it and congratulate her when she does good because I don't want to force her to get a diaper on anymore. I want her to have a choice, but it's not doing any good if I have to force her to sit on the potty too.
Would it be a bad idea if I stop potty training now? Will that make it harder when I try to start again in a few months? I would really like to get her out of diapers as soon as possible though because I lost my job and can't afford them anymore.

If she isn't telling you that she has to go...and trying to do so herself...then yes it is too early to be potty training.

It is WAY to early to pt. Pting should ait till at least after two unless they walk up to the potty and just start going on it. (my daughter did this at 26 months) Pting to early can make them wait even longer.

My girls showed interest that early. HOWEVER, if she isn't showing interest you are wasting your time. I didn't use pullups with my twins. Well, only at night for a few weeks. They are pointless. It still absorbs the urine like a diaper.

That is too early, IMO. My daughter JUST potty trained (through the day, anyway) and she's 3.5

Maybe try cloth diapers?

14months does seem a bit too early. I started when my girls were 2. and no I don't think it will mess you up later when you try again.

I get told we're potty training our son too early and we started when he was like 26 months. He started showing interest at 18 months and that surprised me. 14 months seems very early to me.

She's obviously not ready. 3 is the AVERAGE age for a child to potty train. It will mess her up more if you continue on this track instead of waiting until she's ready.

Don't punish your daughter by forcing her into something she's not ready for just because you "can't" afford diapers.

3.5 and only pt'd thru the day? Holy!! The girls' preschool wouldn't take them unless they were PT'd. My girls were day and night by 2. I went back to work for a few months and my nanny was too lazy to keep up with it so I started over at 18 months. Done by 20m and no accidents at all by 24m

If she's not interested it's too early. It's actually pretty normal for kids to go a few times around that age and then get scared of it because it's too much pressure. We bought my LO a pt toilet around 15 months and she went for like 3 days straight and then acted terrified of it. I let it go for a few months and when she showed interest again she basically trained herself. I'd wait.

You think that is bad. My SIL was being to lazy to potty train her child. She is almost 6 and just now almost completely potty trained because she will be going to school this year and the daycare finally got their heads out of their asses and had a talk with CPS about it.

OP I don't see a problem with keeping a training potty in the house just in case she does show interest in it. It is unlikely she will PT this early but not impossible.

That is super early. Chances are she is not ready. No need to rush it, she will show you when she is ready. You can keep the potty and eventually maybe she will decide she wants to use it. My 2.5 year old is still anti potty even though I think she has the ability to use the potty.

Have you considered buying a few cloth diaper?

I do have a few cloth diapers, they all leak but 2 now though. I think it's because I washed them on hot with vinegar. One site told me to, then another site I found said not to. lol But if you all think it wont mess things up then I'm going to just give it a break and let her decide when she's ready. She already says potty, pee & poop so maybe she'll just tell me one day that she wants to use it. I really don't have any money for diapers though. Luckily my bf does tattoos and is making $10 here and there doing that. My job search isn't going too well right now, no call backs or anything.
