Is my 3 month old eating enough?

posted 26th Jul '12
My son just got over having thrush. He is 15 weeks and for the last couple days he's been eating about 7 ounces in an 8-hour time block. He was taking 3 ounces every two or so hours before. He also sleeps a ton. When he's awake he seems happy and active so I don't think he's sick. And we've checked all over his mouth and can't see any thrush.

So is this just normal for his age or could something be wrong?

Thanks in advance.

Have you tried giving him baby food instead of just a bottle? My LO started eating baby food around that age. And he was also still on a bottle. If he is acting healthy and normal he prob is. If it makes you feel better call the Doctor. I called them non stop when i was a new mommy. Hope i could help

DO NOT use the first persons advice!!!

Do not ever give baby food over formula under a year old. Just keep trying to give more formula. But honestly if hes happy and not acting too strangly I'd let it be for a little while.

I did not suggest giving baby food over formula. I simply stated both would be fine. You can buy cans of baby food for 3 + months or older. Obviously you don't take a bottle away untill atleast after a year. Sorry if you misunderstood.

Doesnt matter, no 3 month old needs baby food. Especiall if the baby isnt eating much formula. The advice you gave is ill informed.

I started feeding mine a little bit of baby food around three to four months and it worked well with me. He loved it! If you don't feel comfortable about that ask your Dr if you can put a little bit of baby rice in the formula. I'm not expert, just going by my personal experiance and what has worked for me.

Once again bad advice, you dont put cereal in a bottle unless there is a medical need like asperation or AR.

And I did that one, for 3 years for medical reasons to I know all too well that its not someing you should do for any other reason.

This is not a debate. I'm simply giving her advice that worked for me. whether or not she takes it doesn't matter to me. But my baby is perfectly healthy and it might be because of the way i chose to feed him.

But why give advice that is bad for a baby that doesnt need it? I just dont understand.

It is not bad advise. Like i said my baby is healthy and couldn't be happier. Me feeding him baby food did not hurt him or give him any food allergies or any illnesses. Neither did the rice/cereal in the bottle. So please tell me how that is bad advice if not one negative health problem has affected my child. And every child is different. Thats why you consult your dr. Or try it, and if it doesn't work as well as it did for my baby, don't continue doing it. I would never give bad advise to another parent for thier child. Do not acuse me of doing so. ALSO i am not a DR, if i must repeat myself it was from my personal experiance and it happened to work out perfect for my baby. He is growing the way he should be. Thanks for your concern.

You're kid isnt even 2, you have no idea if there will be ill effects in the future so you cant really pull that card. And YES, it is bad advice, you dont just "try" anything you like. It is bad advice to give an infant that doesnt eat well baby food or cereal *in the bottle no less* that has no nutrition.

That would have given him a year and a half to show any symptoms to the baby food. My Dr said it was fine to even feed him mashed potatos. So i am no longer going to argue my point to someone who is ignorant to feeding a child.

I am pro-delayed solids so I definitely won't be giving him any food. Thanks for saying it's probably okay. Maybe he's just going through a growth spurt? I know they usually eat a lot during those but I've also heard something about sleeping a lot too and he's definitely doing that so maybe?

It very well could be a growth spurt! Or maybe hes just having a belly issue that his body is trying to sort out. IMO as long as he seems ok and wetting diapers and no real fevers let him go at the pace he wants to. If it goes on another week or so I'd call your Dr just to inform them and see what they say!
