Evening Primrose Oil

posted 26th Jul '12
Was just curious to see if any ladies have tried it and if so did it help you go into labor. I'm 38 weeks pregnant and started them yesterday. Since I'm not really dilating and my cervix is still thick the doctor recommended me take two by mouth and two vaginaly. Any theories ladies?

Watching as I've been in epic slow labour since Monday and tiring out quick. Contractions every 6/7 mins (ate proper ones and getting what feels like no where, last time I was helped along when I slowed down.)

yep i took them from 34 weeks inserting vaginally and by mouth 1000mg a tab, i was 2cm at 37 weeks and at 39 weeks after 20 hours of labour had only dilated to a 3 and it took another 11 hours of labour and a lot of pitocin till i was 10cm. so definatly didnt work for me

I took EPO from 35 weeks on starting at 2000 mg and ending at 5000 mg by 40 weeks. It is not a labour inducer but it does release prostaglandins that will help prepare your cervix for labour. I delivered my youngest at 40 weeks after 1.5 hours of labour. I was also drinking 3 cups of RRLT daily from 37 weeks on as well and truly believe the combination really helped with such a fast and easy delivery. With my first son I didn't take anything and had a 14 hour labour.

i was also taking the RRLT capsules and tea from 32 weeks and didnt help.

I thought they just found out its not safe to do that or something? I dont remember the details, but my neighbor was told to do it by her doc. Her son ended up in the NICU,because he swallowed too much fluid... they told her that her water broke too early, because her body was not yet ready for labor..and ended up in trying to induce labor for 2 days... even though she was 39 weeks.

It didn't do a single thing for me. Unless your body is ready on its own, nothing will help. We tried so many things and it was nothing but a pain in the ass.

Shame to hear it doesn't work all that well. I hope that maybe it will help some. Last night after I took it I felt some tightening in my uterus. So maybe its doing something.

That could be "Castor Oil" which is absolutely not safe. Castor oil is a laxative that can make you sick and basically bring on labour. EPO is used to just soften the cervix.

no,it was evening primrose oil.
I know for sure because I was going to try it this pregnancy... my midwife also told me similar when I asked her last month, she used to use it for many years, but started to see to many cases with some women having issues with their babies being put in the NICU...she started to do resaerch and found it to not always be safe.

Oh no, that is awful news. I haven't heard anything about this. Better to be safe than sorry then. Thanks for the information chick, don't want my baby girl to end up in NICU.
