Child support in california (San Diego)
posted 25th Jul '12
Hi ladies! So this year in April my ex husband and I went to court to for child support. The judge ordered my ex to pay $600 a month. The judge said that his wages were going to be garnished. Well I have yet to get anything? So last month I asked my ex if they started garnishing his wages yet and he told me that he requested to pay be every month in person with a money order? Well he has paid me a total of $300. So I called to court that we had our hearing at and they said that he should be paying me and that if he hasn't to open a case with the county, which I did and I met with a caseworker and she said that his wages are going to be garnished and that he would be going into arrears. My question is, once you opened a case with the county how long did it take to start receiving the child support checks? I feel frustrated because the judge did say his wages would be garnished and I don't see what the whole point was in opening a case with the county if my case with the state was supposed to already handle it??

My ex stopped paying and I filed with child support services and they jumped on it quicker than I expected. I started seeing money about one month later. His employer should have 45 days to start garnishing his wages. Most employers (according to child support services) want to get it done ASAP. Child Support Services also came up with an amount that he owed monthly to start paying back the arrears and that was garnished as well. Then at tax time they intercepted his tax return and I got that to help pay back his arrears. I have had nothing but good experiences working with child support services, but make sure you do your follow up with them just to make sure they are getting stuff done.

Okay today has been 20 days exactly since I opened the case with the child support services. And I called this morning to do a follow up and still there was nothing. Thank you SO much for your info, it's really helped me understand better I hope I get something soon! My son just started school, so he sure can use it.

This is off topic, but what kind of job does your ex have that he only pays 600 a month? Does he share custody?
Reason being is my SO is a legal California resident and he has 2 children with his ex. He pays 1200 in child support and 400 in alimony. His ex wants to take him to court for more money coming up next month because he gets like a $100 raise.

He has two jobs. His main full time job is a male nurse AND he is the manager of that specific location. His second job is a personal, trainer. We have 1 child together and the judge ordered $893 at first. But then my ex said that he has another chilld to support ( the child he had with another woman when he cheated on me) so the judge applied the hardship and it got lowered to $600. And half an any medical or dental expenses. He has him every other weekend.
