Cervidil & Pitocin, share your experience!

posted 24th Jul '12
I'm 40weeks, 5days (first baby) and going in tomorrow at 7pm to be induced. My doctor is going to give me the Cervidil for 12 hours and then start the Pitocin. I was 1cm, 50% effaced last Thursday.

What was your experience like?

They started me straight on pitocin for my induction. I didn't even know what cervadil was until AFTER my delivery. It didn't work for me, but I've heard much better results from other moms. I was on pit for 26 hours straight and never dilated past 2. It was awful, but, like I said, I was just a bad case lol. You're two weeks past when I was induced and mine was for medical reasons, so I'm thinking your LO will be a LOT more ready to head on out!

I didn't have cervidil when I was induced because I was already at 2cm. Had no issues with the pitocin. Once they broke my water after being on pitocin for 2 1/2 hrs they upped the amount I was getting, that's when the real contractions kicked in. I got my epi maybe 1 1/2 later. It was a piece of cake from there. The rest of my labor went smoothly. I know lots of people have had horrible experiences with induction, but just know it's not always bad!

Good luck.

The Pitocin wasn't too bad until they broke my water and i was on Magnesium and Pitocin so i just felt out of it, Anyways the contractions were hell! I even tried ripping the IV out of my arm because it hurt so bad but i wasn't allowed to get an Epi. I think if i would have gotten an Epi it would have been a lot more painless.

I just had straight pitocen with my first son...worked better than cervidil & pitocen with my newb. Like a 6 hour difference better.

My first labor from when they first started the pit until delivery :22 hours 45 minutes

Second labor from when they started cervidil until deliver: 33 hours and 31 minutes

Cervidil was no bueno, it made me contract too quickly so they took it out and it didn't help. Pitocin didn't do smurf either but I contracted like a mf to the point I was throwing up because I couldn't get an epidural and I ended up with a c-section. Pretty much my induction sucked balls. I was in labor for 2 days and only progressed to 3 cm.

My water broke before my contraction started, when I went to the hospital they gave me cervidil first, I'm so thankful they did because pitocin is a horriable drug   Anyway I took really well to the cervidil I had it in for a lil while I think a hr or so, well I started contracting to hard and to fast with it in so they took it out and I contracted wonderfully on my own after that, I went from 4 to a 10 in a hr and half after taking the cervidil out. I would ALWAYS ask for cervidil 1st its alot safer for mom and baby, and doesnt result in c-section as often as pitocin induced labors.

According to a lot of health journals cervadil isnt safe. Its actually not even supposed to be administered for labor. I didnt know this until afterward though.

Stalled at 6cm so I got pitocin and never progressed more even with the max dose. I think I was an abnormal case though. After 24 hours of labor I had a csection, only to find out his head was pressed into my pelvic bones kind of at a 45 degree angle. He actually has permanent depressions in his head from being crammed against my pelvic bones so hard and so long. He was HUGE and I'm short, and have extra ribs so there wasn't much room.

Started me on pitocin but wasn't dilating so they had to stop it and they gave me cervidil 3 times before anything started happening. Spend 2.5 days in the hospital before I was moved to labor and delivery. Finally dilated to a 3 went to L&D at 3pm started pitocin again, had my little man at 12:12am that night.

So it wasn't the BEST scenario but L&D was a breeze by the time I got there. I'm just praying I don't have to go through all that THIS time around (although I'm starting to think I might)...
