Pregnancy after Cone Biopsy

posted 13th May
Hi all. I will be having a cone biopsy done next month to treat pre-cancerous cells. The problem was discovered while I was pregnant in March. However, because I was pregnant, no treatment could be done. I miscarried a couple of weeks ago, so my doc wants me to undergo this biopsy as soon as possible. He told me that there was only very very small risk with the procedure and that I should be able to have happy, healthy pregnancies after I've healed up and any pre-cancer or cancer is treated. I'm only 24 years old and my last pregnancy was my first, so I was hoping to have a long run of baby-making ahead of me, so any fiddlin' with my girlie parts is very upsetting. In addition, its a base hospital and the docs arent known to give you the full spectrum of possibilities or the full information on what is going on. SO...I was wondering whether any of you have had a cone biopsy done and whether you've been pregnant since and what the outcome of the pregnancy(ies) was (were) and whether you had to have any special treatment or procedures (cerclage, etc) as a result of having had a cone biopsy. Any help at all would be great. Its hard enough losing your baby and being told you might have cancer all in one month, but knowing other women who have come through what I'm going through will help a lot!!! Thanks

Love!
P

PS--My husband is ready to pack me up and move me to some isolated island and never let me go back to the docs again, haha. He says all they give is bad news!!!

They have no idea if my body rejected the baby because of the cancer or if the baby just stopped developing on its own due to some chromosomal anomaly.

A cone biopsy is where they go in and take out the innermost portion of your cervix up to a a few milimeters thick and up to a couple of centimeters deep into the cervix in order to remove any bad tissues.

Web MD has a good article or two about it that will give you more info. If you are having trouble visualizing, go to Google and search for Images of "Cone Biopsy" and some decent diagrams will come up.

So like, I go next week to have a ...colscopy done because of a positive test result to HPV...if they take a biopsy..is this what they would do?

They'll do a regular biopsy first (where they cut off TINY TINY pieces of just a few cells each). If those results are bad, they'll either do a LEEP or a Cone Biopsy.

hI U GUYS! IVE 2 MISCARRIAGES BEFORE I FOUND OUT I HAD ABNORMAL CELLS ON MY CERVIX, AFTER MY SECOND MISCARRIAGE IN SEPT. 2007 IS WHEN I FOUND OUT, SO THEY DID A LEEP IN NOV. 2007 AND GOT PREGNANT IN DEC.2007, A MONTH LATER. MY PREGNANCY IS PROGRESSING NORMAL SO FAR, I WAS SCARED AT FIRST TO EVEN PUT MY FEELING INTO THIS PREGNANCY BECAUSE OF SO MANY MISCARRIAGES BEFORE , BUT ITS DOING OK. AND WHEN THEY DID AN ULTRASOUND WHEN I WAS 18 WEEKS TO CHECK MY CERVIX, THEY SAID IT LOOKED FINE, BUT EVERYTHING THAT I THINK CAN BE WRONG, IM EITHER AT DA DOCTOR OR AT THE E.R. TO MAKE SURE EVERYTHING IS OK.

BUT GOOD LUCK AND THERE IS HOPE AFTER YOU GET THE LEEP PERFORMED!

The LEEP is totally different than the cone biopsy. The LEEP is (comparatively) simple and risk-free. My doc doesnt want to do the LEEP for me because it is less reliable and my cells are bad enough to cause enough concern that he doesnt want to risk leaving any bad cells behind! The cone is a totally different process, they take a fairly decent size piece of your cervix out in the Cone.

Heres a link to the WebMD article about Cone Biopsy:

. I'm sorry to hear about your m/cs and your LEEP process, though. Good luck with this pregnancy!
