Not really. Maybe if theyre teens but as kids i doubt they care as long as they have a roof electricity and food. Thats our job to worry about. I think that owning a home is better as its cheaper than renting and can one day be passed down, if you still have it.

ooh shoot, I answered the poll wrong. I said no, but yes I own a home, but I was saying no to your question about it being important to the health and well being of a child. I think living in your own place (not with other adults, especially their grandparents) is detrimental to their health/wellbeing because it was for Lylian, but having your own place, owned or rented, doesnt matter, either way its the same to me. But living with my parents was awful because they wanted to act like grandparents every day, and wouldnt let us parent our child and she became very spoiled and bratty, and it caused us all a lot of stress.

My kid doesn't know that we own rather than rent, and I most certainly don't think it affects his intelligence.

That is so weird that you just posted this because I heard that ad on the radio earlier today...
And it pissed me off! We rent a townhome, would love to own a home in the future but right now I think as long as my girls have a stable loving home than they are no worse off self esteem wise than say a child that lives in a house their parents pay a mortage on.

ooh I also wanted to add it probably isnt good for a child to move constantly (which usually happens more often when people rent I would assume than people who own). Moving alone isnt bad, but if you are bouncing from home to home every few months or so that cant be healthy because it creates no stability in a childs life.

i will buy a home when im financially ready to and i dont think it has any effect on my children except we do move quite often because we havent found that perfect house in the best neighborhood. we will own a home when the time is right

I think the implied "logic" is that if you don't own, you can't be stable and take care of your kids. Owning some how makes you more involved and attentive?

I was just getting ready to say this.

No we do not, although I hope for that in the near future. We live with my in laws, we moved when dh got laid off and then he went back to.school. Now we are in the process of paying our debts down to rebuild our credit and then save for a home. It sucks but they dont interfere too much with my parenting because I speak my mind and put my foot down about their upbringing.

So, it's basically a guilt trip to try and boost the home buying market.

i think that alot of renters (not all) but many (atleast here where i live) move alot and that may be what the research in the ad is referring to. My children have school friends that move every year or more, jumping from one house or apartment to the next in relatively the same area(atleast in the same zip code).
Sometimes its because their lease is up and they found a cheaper place or they want a better neighborhood, or the parents splits up, or they were evicted.....so many different situations.
