ER worthy?

posted 22nd Jul '12
I'm 6w4d pregnant, and for the last several days I've been sooooo nauseous, which I know is normal, but it's to the point I can barely function. I lay on the couch all day, and I have to literally force myself to eat or drink anything. I'm tired and weak, and I've lost almost 5 lbs in the last 3 days.

Is this ER worthy? Or should I wait it out till tomorrow and call my OB?

Call your OB tomorrow. You've been dealing with it for 3 weeks. Not exactly an emergency.

Call your doc, If your losing weight then they might be able to give you something to gain some back.

I called my OB and she called in a prescription of Zofran. It has been a life saver and made it possible to function. Make sure you stay hydrated. I have found that if I don't eat, I stay more nauseous. As contradictory as it seems, I had to force myself to eat something small to keep something in my stomach to prevent the nausea.

I would try and hold out to call your OB but if you feel you can't then I say go. Are you staying hydrated?

Actually, I've only been dealing with it for 3 days. The first couple weeks of my pregnancy were fine, but for the last 3-4 days I've been miserable. Didn't think it was normal to lost 5 lbs in 3 days.

As long as you can keep water down than it is nor ER worthy, Just call your doctor for an appointment he may be able to give you some thing.

I was the same but couldn't keep water down and ended up in hospital for 2 days because I was badly dehydrated.

I'm trying, but probably not great. All day yesterday all I had was a bottle of water and some peppermint tea.

Today I've had about 5 sips of water. EVERYTHING makes me feel like I'm going to hurl.

i had the same thing my first trimester i lost 15 pounds and gained 3 back from being so sick. i'm down a jean size but now i'm all belly. my second trimester has been a lot better but i still get sick like once a week. as long as you're not dehydrated, i would keep resting. they can give you zofran to help the nausea. i took it before bed and when i woke up and it seemed to work better.

Not ER worthy, that's for life or death emergencies. Call your OB tomorrow, or do you have an on call doctor?

Yeah, there is an afterhours number I think. I'm going to give them a call and see what they can do.

Unfortunatley this is normal. Morning sickness( not quite sure why they call it that when your sick all day) is different with everyone. I had a heaping dose of it this pregnancy, I couldnt do anything! and thats a bad thing when you have a 3 1/2 year old running around. I was prescribed Zofran and it didnt work for me, I tried 2 more before I was given promithyzine and that was my savior drug. ( its completely safe for pregnant women) Losing weight in the first trimester is normal too, your body will put that weight back on the further along you get. I lost a total of 10 pounds the first trimester and I have gained it back. If you doctor is worried about the weight lost you and him/her will come up with a plan for you. my mother in law suggested to me when you wake up keep saltine crackers by your bed, and nibble on one, not like take big bites but just nibble. I wasnt able to do this but it might be helpful to you. as much as everything is making you sick you have to keep drinking water. Dehydration can put you in early labor, and with you only in your first trimester it could cause complications. the next time you have an OB appointment write down all of your questions and ask you doctor everything. I hope you start feeling better.

Oh and my friends told me about preggo pops they help with nausea. I found out about this after the morning sickness went away. They are suckers is assorted flavors that help with the nausea.

Good luck hun and Congrats on the baby!

I went through the same thing from weeks 7 to 18 and I'm 21 now. The only thing I was ever able to keep down was broth. Even now I still struggle to eat anything and usually do well with soft fruits and certain vegetables. If you're finding it's easier it drink things then eat, just make everything liquid. Soups, smoothies, etc. Definitely talk to your OB about it ASAP. I know it's Sunday, but I'd call first thing tomorrow morning. Chances are she/he will just prescribe you some nausea meds UNLESS she/he thinks there is something wrong with the baby.
My friend also had extreme nausea in her first trimester and said it got worse her 3rd. I can't remember the term for it, it's nasty to have, but perfectly normal. I think I lost a total of 10-15 pounds in the first 3 or 4 weeks and then it started to even out as she started to grow. Good luck and definitely call your OB first thing in the morning
