amniocentesis?

posted 21st Jul '12
im 28 weeks, the doctor is requesting and suggesting an amnio because the baby was diagnosed with Tetralogy of Fallot, a heart defect.. and the want to make sure there is no other chromosomal abnormalties. No one else in both our familys have anything wrong with them, but everyones suggesting I get this test done. I'm petrified to know, honestly, and either way no matter what I'm still going to go through with this pregnancy. I'm also reading about going into pre term labor, and water breaking after an amnio after 22 weeks.. and lets not get into the false positives and false negatives.

Has anyone else gotten an amnio after 23 weeks?? Was the results wrong? Am i completely insane or am I right? :/ stuck in a horrible situation.

I personally didnt have one but we had no worries everything was fine. In my opinion i would not have one done for multiple reasons. 1.
Knowing will not change the out come of pregnancy. 2. What will knowing really change besides make you stress for rest of pregnancy. 3. Knowing wont prepare you anymore bc they cant see how severe the issue it. 4. There are risks associated with the test due research and make the decision from there. In the end its your choice and dont let anyone influence you otherwise

I had one at 21 weeks....they gave me medicine during and for 1 day after to calm my uterus......at that point in my case it needed to be done....I was 3cm dialated and bag of water was bulging....so theyneeded to test some things as well try to get some extra fluid out to bring my bag of water up a bit...

You will want to know what to expect, it's important they know all they can to help you and your child. It also can help you find resources to plan for your families future. The risks are there, but are minimal.

I had one at 22 weeks Friday to be exact. It wasn't as nearly bad as I thought it would be. I haven't had any pains or side effects so far (knock on wood). However in my case I had more pros towards getting it done than going without.
