Should I ask his Dr. or no?

DS is eight years old he has had severe behavioral issues since he was about two years old. He has been diagnosed with PDD *a high functioning form of autism* and possible bipolar disorder. His doctor has not set these in stone because of the fact that he is still so young. As he has gotten older his melt downs have become much fewer and far between. He used to have them several times a day, kicking, biting, hitting, throwing things, screaming, and trying hurt himself. Now, he will go for a good while doing very well with no melt downs and for about a week have a very hard time. He gets really worked up and gets very upset. He isn't nearly as violent anymore though, just yells at anything you will say, and cries a lot.He has gone a good three months with out a melt down, he has been very edgy all week though. I know that he tends to get anxious sometimes and that tends to get him upset. We are sending him to public school this fall instead of homeschooling again, this worrys me alittle because of his melt downs. Do you think he is too young to talk to the doctor about possibly prescribing him some PRN anxiety meds? When he starts to get upset, to help him stay calm.

I know some doctors prescribing them younger than that. Can you ask about non built up meds meaning its a pill for very bad days instead of having to build it up in the system. My 4 year old has sever anxiety. And if we chose meds some day that's what we'll go with

I don't think eight is too young at all. Especially when school is involved. He's going to need help staying calm and focused in order to succeed and so he's not in trouble.

DS is 6 and has severe ADHD with ODD, it's also highly likely that he is also bipolar and/or has some kind of high functioning autism like your son. We started him on meds for his ADHD in December as his doctor suggested handling one problem at a time. They help tremendously for his ADHD, but he still has his other issues. Like your son, he also gets upset very easily, often over nothing. And he has anger issues sometimes. We plan on seeing how his ADHD meds keep working until at least this December (his dosage has been upped twice but I think it's where it should be now) then taking him back to figure out what to do next.

PRN=as needed
I wouldn't want to put him on something he would need daily for anxiety seeing that he doesn't have it daily.
