Obese moms-to-be have longer pregnancies
NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Pregnant women who are overweight or obese in the first trimester of pregnancy and those who have a greater change in body weight during pregnancy are more apt to have lengthier pregnancies and more complications, according to results of a new study.

I thought this article was interesting. I amin the obese catagory but I haven't had any complications duringmy pregnancy. But now I'm wondering ifI'm going to go past my due date.

I was overweight when I got pregnant. They had to induce me. No complications. She was just a big baby who didnt want to come out.

There is always someone saying something about "obese" people...I don't really believe that to be the case all the time...I'm more apt to believe that someone who is heavier would deliver early because of the risks of preeclempsia and gestational diabetes, issues that tend to have the baby delivered early on....women who are heavier tend not gain as much weight during the pregnancy because there is an implied "weight restriction" of only 10-20 lbs...but I think the odds are the same for "all" women during pregnancy.

I agree, that tends to happen more often...but there are mommies out there that weighed 100 lbs or so and then gained 45-50 lbs for the pregnancy which I think would be more of a strain on their small frame than it would be for someone like me who carried around extra weight to begin with, to gain 10-20 lbs.

Well, I was overweight AND I gained 75 pounds.

I definitely think it would be harder for tiny girls. I had a nine pound baby and everyone always asks how I did it. My labor wasnt that bad at all.

i think it is bull too..while i know a lot of overweight women who have complications, i know a lot of underweight ones too that have gd and preeclampsyia..my aunt started at 110 and she is 5'5..and she has gd and has to be induced on the 6th....i on the other hand started out at 231 and now weigh 234..yes only 3 pounds and i am 37 weeks...i have had no complications other than anemia..and i have rh- blood, with my 1st i did go over by 10 days but i think that was because he was my first because i had no complications with him either..and my 2nd was born on my due date...and again no complications.

okay, by a doctors standard poeple may be considered "overweight," but if you are considered clinically obese meaning you are 75+ more (which is what the article is referring to when they use the term obese)than what your "ideal body weight" should be then I doubt that your doctor would've been okay with you gaining 75 lbs...that's why I'm saying I don't buy that it's not normal for obese women to have longer pregnancies because we do tend to have more cases of GD and Preeclempsia, reasons for babies to be born earlier...

I love that you say I was 128 and not thin...maybe not compared to a supermodel, but compared to real women you are considered thin   heck I would love to weight 148 right now...I agree with you that when it comes to weight it's hit or miss when it comes to complications, I just don't like that people are always ready to act as though overweight people are the only ones that can have a health issue...it's alarming.

it really is alarming...i am just glad i have a doc that isn't on me for my size...he said one time..well you are moderately overweight and i was like dude u must be blind cause i am huge..but he is really nice..and he saw that i had no problems so he didn't have a problem with my weight.

I've always felt good about the way I look, and I'm glad that my doctor was clear about the amount of weight she felt that I could gain in a healthy way...I haven't gained nearly what I should have, I have only gained 3 lbs as of my last check up, but they've said that I have been doing excellent with what I should be eating and that my body is doing what it naturally should be doing...If I weighed 120 lbs I probably would be freaking out about every lb and comparing myself to everyone else...thankfully all I need to worry about is being as healthy as I can for my baby, and worry about everything else later.

i think i am a beautiful person just wanna lose a little bit cause i see the problems my family members have later in life..but..i have only gained 3 lbs. also but they did tell me that i didn't have to gain anything and the baby would be fine, she would just get what she needs from me..cause i was worried at first cause i kept losing..i just now gained the three pounds at my last appointment (36 wks)...but i have noticed that the rest of my body is much smaller while my stomach is huge...but they are worried she is going to be too big, so what they told me must be true...
