Discipline??

posted 13th May
Hi ladies! I really need some advice.
My son is 8 months old *he's my first* and we're starting to have a problem. He's learning this growling and "spoiled scream" thing. I HATE it. I think I should've started telling him no sooner, (again, he's my first) and now I can't get him to stop!
Every time he wants something he grunts at me like a teenager!! That uuugh thing!! It's SO annoying. Especially when he does it in front of people!I tell him no and make him wait, but he still does it!!
How do I make him stop without being too harsh?? It's different when he grabs something he's not supposed to, a little tap on the hand and a good no does it... but this is just out of my area.
He's smarter then he wants us to think!
I could really use some advice on how to make him stop being... well... spoiled and impatient!!

If you're interested in a whole system of discipline, I would recommend reading a Love and Logic book by jim faye. They have different strategies geared towards all ages, including early childhood. I will look up the book and let you know the exact name if youre interested. I LOVE it though. I use it in elementary classrooms and early childhood settings and see very positive results! The main purpose is to provide gentle, loving ways to discipline that arent physical and actually gives the child some power in it (or at least in their minds). It's great, I highly recommend it.

i know it will be hard but try to ignore his screams...he will realize he is not getting the attention he wants and eventually he will stop doing it...just keep telling him no when he is doing something he is not supposed to do..he is at the age where he is starting to learn right from wrong so spanking or tapping his hand will probably not work right now because he doesn't know better...but when he screams, he does it for attention whether it be good or bad attention...so if u don' t give it to him, he will figure out that it isn't working.

I agree.U could also try other methods. There are many books and articles on how to discipline a child. Hey what about asking a family member or close friend to give u some ideas?

I've done the cry it out and it just makes him madder. I'll leave him in his crib and he just cries himself to sleep. Should I continue this?
Other than this, he's a great baby. He goes to sleep on time, he's developing like he should be, but this temper. He's so stubborn!!!
I'll most definitely have to read that book!!!!!!!

yea you should let him cry it out..as long as he's not making himself sick.. but he will get the picture.

No, once he realizes we're not standing right there he'll stop. He'll still grunt and complain but he finds something else to entertain himself with. I keep toys in his crib or pack 'n play until he falls asleep, then I take them out. So he ends up playing with them until he conks out.
I've been doing this "cry it out" thing for about 3 weeks now and he just doesn't getthe picture. I just want that spoiled scream to go away.I love playing with him and it just makes it hard when he wants his way that I'm just not willing to give. I hate having to stand my ground and listen to him cry, but I do it. It takes a lot not to just pick him up and hold him, but I don't. Or give him my phone or remote to play with, but I know it's something important and he throws things. What's harder is making him feed himself (teething biscuits or cheerios. He doesn't want anyone holding his bottle). He gets so frustrated because he wants to do it as fast as I can, but he just can't yet. It's miserable. I love my son to death and I just want him to be happy!

awwww...i hate that when they do things like that..it is soooo hard to hear your baby cry and not pick them up ...i have to admit, i am guilty of giving in sometimes..but not always...idk...hopefully it is just a phase..sounds like you are doing a good job by standing your ground though...just keep it up..i hope he gives up..

MINE TOO! He just picks him up andwalks around withhim. My son is a little monster (he's at like 21 1/2 lbs) and he's just too heavy to carry around for me! I hate it. He's starting to catch on that maybe Daddy will hold him, but not Mama. I rock him at naptime and bedtime so he'll get a little sleepy then put him in his crib to fall asleep. That's our ritual. We play on the floor and sometimes I'll pick him up when necessary during playtime, but I just can't hold this little wiggle worm when he's this active and heavy!!!

I think you have the boy version of my daughter. shes a heavy wiggle worm too. lately she wont even let me rock her, she insists on being put in bed. which is a good thing. but i DO want to hold her sometimes! just not when she growling at me! LOL

Youre welcome. I personally havent been able to try it out with my little one yet, since he isnt here yet   However, I figure if it works in a day care or preschool or elementary school where the kids aren't as trusting and you dont know them as well, I figure it would be just as easy (if not easier) for kids you know really well! It's a great book! Good luck to you. You'll have to let me know what you think of it!
