baby signing

ok..when did you start? At what age? How long did it take to "catch on". I just got a book / flashcards/ cd about it today and i'm really excited to start!

I always wonder about this, is this something that we have to teach our baby?

My sister started w/her daughter right away. When speaking to her, she would also sign the things she wanted her to be able to sign.

They teach the classes around here when your baby is about 6 months. However, I plan on using it almost immediately for several reasons. The benefits are the greatest when you use it early. And even though a tiny baby wont understand, it doesnt hurt either. Plus, I think starting at an earlier age than the baby can understand will give me and my husband time to practice and become used to using the signs. Then when he/she is old enough, we wont have to be learning it at the same time that we're teaching it. Does that make sense? Basically we're going to use it really early, even though it wont really be understood or used by the baby for quite some time.
