Homosexuality: Environment or Genetics?

posted 13th May
I was thinking about this yesterday and I thought it'd make a good debate topic. Where do you think homosexuality comes from? Is it in their genetic makeup or does environment have more to do with it?
My old hair dresser is gay and I went to school with his little brother Albert. Well all through high school everyone thought Albert was gay because.. well you could just tell. Albert denied it and swore up and down he was straight. Well after 10 years I just found him on myspace and he's now an open gay!
I find it interesting that both he and his older brother are now openly gay. It makes you think it's probably all in their genes but at the same time their father passed away when Albert was a baby so the only male role model he had was his gay brother. So that suggests it could be environment..
What do you think??

Genetics. Edited: genetic factors combined with hormonal factors.

If the "gay gene" were isolated and you could test for in in pregnancy, would you abort if the baby was determined to be homosexual?

I think its genetics too! Theres this family that my ex boyfriend went to school with.. the girl was a lesbian and the boy was gay! They both had a mother and father figure in their lives the whole time. The girl actually works construction & the guy is a hairdresser.   I think it's a little odd but, thats jmo.

i think its a mix of both-more on the genetics side of course, ive heard relationships you have can also impact sexuality, like with your parents etc..or it might just be weather they come out of the closet or not-my fiances brother found out a year ago that his gf of five years was a lesbian-poor guy

Absolutely not! I wouldn't abort underany circumstances. I would hope my children turn out straight but if they were gay I would love them just the same.

I think it's genetics. I also know 2 brothers who are both gay. They have both of their parents still alive and living together.

I'm not really sure. My friend Ben grew up the all American Football player macho kind of guy, and now he's openly gay.I know about everyone in his family, and noone is gay. It's not a 'scared' thing or anything, his parents love are more than fine with it, and even want him and his life partner to move closer to home. Yet there is no others people in his life that were gay. I also know that givn the All American Boy way he grew up , that it DEFINATELY wasn't enviornmental. And we may be from Louisiana, but he never frequented that side of Bourbon Street. I asked him one day when he knew he was gay. And all he said was 'I don't know. a guy made a pass at me, and I liked it. Boom, from then on I jsut seemed to get gayer ad gayer." So I think neither. I think that it's a choice. Of course I believe that if you're used to being around gay people, then it's not as strange to you, but I still think it's a choice. A choice soem wouldn't even CONSIDER, but a choice none the less. But then again, I'm not gay, so I don't really know.

LOL, that is odd!

Well I 3 cousins are are all brothers and 1 of them is gay and the other 2 are macho guys. I still think it's genetic though.

i wouldnt abort either but if it was genetics dont you think they could isolate the gene? at least just announce it not alter it?

definitely not. I have no problems with people who choose to be gay. I would try my best to not let it happen.. but, if Ryleigh ends up being a lesbian when shes older thats something i'll have to learn to accept. Just because she chose to love girls wouldnt change how much I loved & cared for her.
