Speech Delay in a four year old
posted 20th Jul '12
My oldest just turned four on July 10th he has a speech delay I have tried getting him help can't get the school district to call me back and the dr referred me to the district. I am not sure how bad it is cause he won't participate in the testing and gets distracted. He knows what things are he can count to 20 by himself he knows colors, shadows, and likes to sing some nursery rhymes but he can put together sentences and he still uses baby gibberish to fill in the gaps. Everyone says when he gets in preschool he will start talking but I am trying to see if there is anything I can do to help are there any activities you moms do to help your LOs I am just about willing to try anything to help him. Thank you

If the doctor and district are playing tag with you, you could try calling or searching online for child therapists in your area. Sometimes they have them at the health department and you can check with Social Services about them. I know that a lot of school districts go through S.S. for speech and other therapists that they use during the school year. If they're not too far from where you're located you might consider going directly to them one week day, before school starts back in session and talking with someone that way. I know the closer it gets to school starting back up the harder it is to get in touch with anyone up there. Good Luck!

My son also has speech delays. The advice they have given was talk...all the time. Just about what you are doing or what you're getting ready to do... just talk.

Thankfully he is potty trained and he can communicate when he has to go it is just getting him to put together sentences the biggest sentence he can put together is " Can I please have (whatever he wants)" and a few three word sentences but I have a friends daughter who is just a littler older then him and you can have a conversation with her

One of the most effective ways to teach correct language is to model it. This can be done easily by reading!
Read to your child every chance you get! Read books he loves. Ask questions about the book! Discuss what coud happen etc.
Also, something we've just started here is news. Every night after our 1/2 hour of story time we have news time. First I give news. I find something, anything, and stand up, clearly say "Hello everyone. Today I am sharing my __________. I got my _________ from ___________. This sleeps on my shelf in my bedroom. I use it to ___________" and so on. Just modelling what is expected. Then my son has a go. They mimic, it works!
Now, we're taking the extra step and I am recording his news. I plan to make a blog, but it's also a good way to share his progress with his speech therapist.

Hi Mama, I have an almost 4 year old (in Nov) that also has a speech delay. He started speech therapy when he was 2 years, 2 months old. Some of the things I did with him was flash cards, puzzles, mr potato head (for body parts). We are going through the county right now to try to get him in school. He's been in pre-school for a year but is still not where he is suppose to be. Instead of waiting for a call back, you should call them and see where they are on the process. Good luck! If you ever want to talk I am here
