why??

ok im all for a child being inquisitive and showing an interest in things but the "whys" drive me insane!!!
for example harley (my 3 year old): what u doing mummy?
me: im hanging the washing out
harley: why?
me: becuase its wet
Harley: why?
me: becuase it has just come out of the machine
harley: why?
me: it was dirty so i put it in the machine to wash it and now im drying it so that you can wear it again
harley: why?
etc etc etc
we just seem to go round in circles!!!
anyone else have this problem? or had this problem?
and how the hell did you stay sane???

When children do that to me I answer as much as I can and then I just start asking them why they want to know so bad. And if they say because I'm curious than I ask why? It keeps them busy for a while.

My grandfathers response was always.....
"Because "Y" has a curly tail and you cant straighten it."

lol ihave tried the saying y back thing but he just gets angry with me. and lol i dont even understand the curly tail thing so i think he would just ask why to that lol

the letter y is printed with a curled tail... nonsense response to nonsense question....... has no real significance, but always made me think it.. and stop asking wuestions...like how long is a piece of string?

I watch a few three year olds and when they start this I ask them - well, why do you think (what ever it is they are asking why about) ? It stops them in their tracks!

my son is only 21 months and he has started that lately. When my daughter went thru that I would answer a few of the why's and then when the circle began I would just ask her why she thought it was and she would give me her answer and I would say "that's why" As for staying sane it's just barely possible to keep sane, according to a survey the average 3-4 year old asked over 400 questions a day and most of those are "why"

i have an 18 month old who will be talking soon so i guess its all to come again!!!
at least he isnearly 4 so maybe he will grow out of it soon!!
