Should senior citizens have to retake driving tests?

posted 12th May
Do any of you feel that senior citizens should have to retake driving tests every year past a certain age?

Why or why not?

Yep, because cordination and reaction time declines with age. Some seniors who are driving are complete hazards (not saying anyone else isn't, though, lol) and have no business driving.

I feel that senior citizens should retake tests. My great grandmother drove till she was like 75, and then one day, she drove all the way across town, down some of the busiest (sp?) streets in this town and ended up at my dad's work utterly confused and honestly didnt know how she got there. She could have killed someone or herself. Needless to say we found out that she has dimensia and really shouldnt have been diving.

But in the same breath...I'm sure there are people out there, that are not senior citizens that do the same thing...so I really dont know

*edited b/c my spelling and punctuation kinda sucks

Agreed. If they are able to pass then they will, and although a minor inconvenience it is a service to everyone. If they fail, then they shouldnt be driving, again its maintaining the safety of everyone.

I think maybe 65 is a good age, possibly abit younger.

Recently, an 80 something year old woman, was trying to make an illegal U turn and hit a 20 something man on a motorcycle, killing him almost instantly.

She said she was confused and thought it was alright to make the U turn, even though there was a sign clearly stating NO U turns. She said her eyesight must be bad....

So yes, I personally think they should have to retake the test. Their eyesight is weaker and their reaction time isn't exactly at it's all time peak.

Some nutcase didn't even bother stopping this afternoon in a parking lot when I clearly had the right of way, then she wondered why I was glaring at her... geeze, some people.

i feel that yes, senior citizens should be required to retake a driver's test once they have passed a certain age. or maybe a series of tests. like first, an eye exam. and that should be ok for a few years, then on to another test, etc. i only say this b/c it's difficult to pinpoint an exact age when someone should be forced to take the entire exam over. but i have been severely injured in a car accident where a 90 yr old man was the cause, and he had no idea what happened. he hit someone else 6 mo after me, and only then did they take away his keys.

Something simmilar happened here, a man in his 80's ran into a crowed of people killing 10 and injuring a lot more b/c he said he mistook the gas peddle for the break  .

Personally, I think everyone should have to retake the driving test every couple of years not just senior citizens.

YES YES YES!
if they have poor night vision (which most due) and slow reaction times then they should not be allowed behind the wheel...

Oh goodness.....I'm afraid to ride with my grandma. I swear she's the innocent old lady driving down the road and in her wake is destruction. Over turned semi trucks, cars on fire...

Two prime examples are as followed

Just a few months ago a elderly woman was killed when she ran a stop sign and entered into the middle of a busy roadway.

My great grandfather rear ended someone because he couldn't see that the light was red and obviously missed that the person in front of him was stopped.

Also let me mention how a good portion of them drive so freakin' slow. I swear I get stuck behind the ones that do 20MPH in a 35MPH zone that really pisses me off

I agree, but there's not enough funding for that... and the DMV is rediculous as it is. I have to retake a driving test this year for my Class B licsence and I'm not looking forward to having a set appointment then waiting for an hour after my appointment time, lol.
