Midwife vs. Doctor

posted 18th Jul '12
With my first pregnancy, I had my doctor and it was a great experience. After doing some research I thought I might go with a Midwife this time around. I was just wondering how your experience was? What was it like? What do they do? Is it different and how different?

Here is the website im looking at http://www.midwifery-care.com/mainpage.html#healthcare

They offer a lot of great things like providing care for you and baby up to 6 weeks postpartum and being on call 24 hrs/ day, 7 days a week. The other great thing is that it's all free. I do however plan on giving birth at the hospital but the great thing about that is that they encourage mom and baby to go home 3-4 hours after hospital birth---not something I was able to do with my first born.

Oh, that's interesting. I was thinking I might do that since I am a bit hesitant, but having two caregivers is viewed as a duplication of health care services, so I can only have 1.

I was high risk with my son and had a midwife, OB, and HR OB. My midwife was amazing! She was in the OR when I had my emergency c/s with my son and stayed with him until my husband could get to the NICU (he said with me because I was having complications on the table). She took his first pictures for us and came by to check on us every day for the 4 days we were in the hospital. Her care the whole pregnancy was much less invasive than the OBs I had to see and so I made most appointments with her and my HR. She refused to check me as often as my regular OB wanted because I was already in stage 1 labor at 27 weeks and the goal was to keep me pregnant until 37 weeks (we made it to 34ish). She would tell us every appointment "let's check his heart beat and get a quick sono for your fluid levels and then decide if you need to go through that hell." I loved her.

I had a great experience with a midwife for my second delivery. Very calm and relaxing with limited interference. I walked thru my entire labour, never had to get up on the bed until it was time to push and even then I was on my hands and knees. It only took two big pushes and I had my little boy. I also had the hospital birth. I have a midwife for this pregnancy as well, I wouldn't go back to an OB.

Sounds like you had a great experience, and I really want to have exactly just that. People keep telling me "it's like the support you never had..." and my heart is really leaning more towards having a Midwife this time around. I love my doctor, she's great and my OBGYN too---but, I always feel like they are trying to rush me out of their office.

She was MUCH better than my reg OB. The HR OB always gave us lots of sono pix so I loved seeing him once a month, but I got to see Claire every 2 weeks for 6 weeks (20 to 28 weeks) and then twice a week until I had Syfy. I was sad when I was in different state for my daughter, but my HR OB was much better than my reg OB for my son had been. He was a lot like Claire so it made it much easier on me to see him.

I had multiple midwives during my pregnancy, but a doctor delivered my son. I was receiving care from military clinics and the military hospital with Tricare Prime, so I didn't really get to pick who I wanted. I really wanted one of the midwives I was seeing during my pregnancy to deliver, but it didn't work out that way. During care they all were so sweet, very helpful, always concerned about me, I absolutely loved going to my visits. When the doctor delivered my son it was very to the point. She actually didn't even speak to me, she just delivered him, pulled out my placenta, stitched me up, and left. Whenever we have our second I plan on getting a midwife, it just felt so much more personal. Of course it could've been just that particular doctor.

In the UK you have both as standard. We have free healthcare so the way it works out is if your pregnancy is healthy and normal you will see a doctor maybe twice during your pregnancy and the midwife will be your main care-giver and will deliver your baby unless any problems arise. If your pregnancy is high-risk then you will have a midwife but you will see your doctor a lot more and he/she will ultimately be the main care-giver for your pregnancy. High risk Moms must deliver in a hospital with a doctor present or nearby, just incase.

I have a midwife (like homebirth midwife) that I am paying and I see an OB that insurance covers until it's established that I'm definitely low risk (within my personal comfort zone).

So, I guess a combination of those would be great, liek a midwife in a hospital, but that just isn't possible here

Midwives seem to care for more than the physical wellbeing of a person and her baby but also the emotional wellbeing which is wonderful. I am definitely using a midwife during my next pregnancy now that I know Tricare covers them.
