re: scraping of membranes?

What is the stripping/scraping of the membranes? I will be 39 weeks tomorrow and last week I was 1/2 cm dilated (LOL) and 50% effaced and I have not noticed any contractions or any signs of labor and if this will help, I wanna ask my doc about it at my appt Thursday. Fill me in =]

This procedure usually feels like a vaginal examination, although it sometimes can be painful or cause cramping. The practitioner places her gloved finger through the cervix and sweeps the amniotic membranes free of their attachment to the lower part of the uterine cavity. This process is believed to release hormone-like substances called prostaglandins, which help to ready your body for labor.

And another thing...I am positive for GBS...am I not able to get the membranes stripped since it might bring the baby closer to infection? Does anyone know??

I just came back from my appt and inquired about stripping of membranes while being GBS positive and he said it would be ok.
He didn't do it though because I'm not due. blaaaaaah.

well it worked I went into labor on the 13th and had her yesterday morning. I hope you girls that had appiontments this week got yours done too
