I'm going to have a breakdown.....

posted 17th Jul '12
i posted this over in the sensory processing disorder thread since my daughter has SPD.....but wanted to see if anyone else out there has any advice. Here is my post:

hi ladies. i have a quick question.

My daughter starts her OT on monday but I'm just exhausted and i don't know what to do at this point. Like i said before, my daughter had her tonsils out last monday and its hard enough on a 2.5 yr old let alone one that has SPD.

Well she hasn't been doing good at all. Over the past 2 days her meltdowns are beyond horrible. i can normally get her to come down from a meltdown esp because i know what caused it. With being on pain meds and having so much change in the last week i couldn't even tell you why she's flipping out. now. Its lasting 30-45 min and I've tried everything to help her. Its to the point i just let her g, but she comes and sits in front of me and flips out (like she wants me to help or do something). She won't let me touch her, talk to her, give her the things the normally help her.

Today she flipped out for 40 min and just kept saying "i can't help it". Its breaking my heart that i cannot help my own child. She finally calmed down and went to sleep around 8 only to wake up flipping out again around 930.

I'm just lost right now. Its been the longest week with 3 visits back to the ER.

Any advice? "

Burrito wrap her in a blanket??? If she'll let you, maybe that would calm her down...   Sorry mama!

Have you tried hugging her tightly when she's out of control?

Try talking to this Momma if you haven't already...she's great!

Do you have a sensory brush yet? Or joint compressions? Tried totally dark with soothing music or absolute quiet? Wish your appointment was sooner...

i don't have nay experience with SPD but the best advice that i can give is just be there for her. Let her know that you love her but let her have her meltdown. Maybe once she is calmed down you can ask her what was bothering her so you can know for the next time it happens.
hope she starts to feeling better.

thats what i have tried doing so far and i would normally just let her get it out. I'm just worried right now because of her tonsils and adenoids just being removed. Im worried the screaming is going to be a problem and just put her in more pain.

Do you have a swing or hammock or sit and spin? I know it's kinda late, but you could try...or maybe that riles her up more??? It's been awhile since I've worked with any kiddos with SPD, but I remember some...

My daughter has major sensory issues. She's almost nine now. A warm bath almost always leaves her calm...unfortunately, sometimes I have to wrestle her into it.

I was able to manage a bath today! i was grateful for that. but it doesn't help much in the calming down dept.

Will she let you scratch her back? My daughter loves it and it almost always relaxes her.
