Finally looking for an apartment =)

posted 17th Jul '12
I recently started a new job and today I got my first paycheck, I take home $1019 every two weeks. I would love to move out of my moms house finally with my two daughters but I'm not sure where to start or what's a good price point for an apartment? Here in NY rent is pretty high, for a two bedroom my mom pays $1230 a month on top of utilities and other bills. I'm just scared of not being able to pay my rent, etc. . You could say I'm nervous lol

usually youll want to take what rent is, and i would say its good to make twice that amount, sometimes more to be comfortable with bills, and other expenses

I always sit down and figure out what everything would cost and want to make more than what I need to spend before going in. Make sure ou count for laundry detergent and shampoo that kind of stuff. Maybe you and your mom ould just find a bigger place together?

We bump heads a lot and it's just time that I move out. I help her with bills and rent here and it isn't working out so well ..

Where in NY are you from? I live in long island, depending on the town, depends on the prices. I have seen some nice 2 bedrooms around for 1200. Eastern L.I. is the cheapest. I love it outeast and plan on moving out there in the next few months.

When you thinking about the payments don't forget to include car payments, insurance, grocery shopping, household items, plus the extra things needed for kids like diapers, school stuff. Electric and T.V services. You should make checklist of all your payments and the total costs. You don't want to leave yourself with nothing.

first factor in how much rent is going to be say 1300 just to be safe including utilites. add how much you spend on gas, say 120/month. groceries, 250-300/month. phone and pge-120. now these are rough estimates. already we are at 1815. idk if you have to pay for day care or not but thats just an extra charge...
maybe consider moving out with your mom and get a bigger place for all 4 of u that your mom and yourself split all costs.

i know my husband and i pay about 3000/ month with all our bills together. our rent alone for a smurffy 2 bedroom apt is almost 1500. we have a $350 car payment that we just got as well.

I spend about $200 per week on groceries for me my hubby and my 2 kids. Now with the 3rd on the way I bets its going to be even more. Living with three boys who eat A LOT isnt cheap lol.

yea i was being light on that department. but so and i spend probably about 300 a month on groceries, but its just the 2 of us. our lil one is only 8 months and i also get wic which probably saves us well over 200 a month if not more on baby food and some groceries.

Your rent should be no more than 30% your post-tax income...

then account for utilities, groceries, and other life expenses.

I would save a couple months paycheck s before u move out. U don't want to be struggling and worried about rent. Save as much as u can before u move. I'm with parents now and.trying to pay off. CC debt before I move. I live in Chicago and a one bedroom is about $900-$1000 not including utilities which when I was with BD were about $200-300 month.
