GROWING?!

posted 12th May
When did your preemie start to catch up growing to their real age?

im still waiting, but i dont expect it to be for years. It totally depends on the babies individual situation and their gest age at birth. Ive seen later preemies leave hospital the same size as any other term baby. How many weeks early was your little one and how old are they now?

oo well thats real good then! mine wasat adjusted age lol I was told to use adjusted age for everything until 2 years. Im sure if hes feeding/getting enough calories then he will catch up real soon. Some babies are just on the smaller side, considering alot of babies are 6lbs at term and then lose weight, 8.5lbs at 6 weeks is pretty good! I was told that as a term babies growth slows down, preemies usually continue to thrive, especially on high cal supplementation/formula.

I really dont think its worth comparing to things in books (although we cant help but read& research& worry lol). Every baby is different and follows a different growth curve - especially if theyve got/had a health issue. Im sure if there is any concern for his growth they will tell you about it and do whats necessary.

lol i just dozed off for an hour! Yeh i really struggle, for us there is their actual age, adjusted age and then the gest age he was at birth (IUGR/development issues). On top of all that he has fallen behind even more with growth due to serious health complications. So it is really hard for me, especially when people who ask have no idea about preemies!

I generally say; he was born after he stopped growing at about 26 weeks gestation, and now he is X weeks old, which would make him Y weeks old if he was born healthy at 40 weeks (term).

Thats the only way i think i can do it so people understand!!

Hope your getting some quality sleep!

My daughter was born March 18 she wasn't due until June 8. Right now she weighs almost 6 pounds. And well gest she would be i think 36 or 37 somewhere around there. When she was born she weighed 2lbs 10.7ounces, she had dropped to 2lbs 4.4ounces. From what i see as she is growing she is doing good. Well i at least hope she is doing good! She is almost 2 months now, well since birth.

Paige is on track according to her adjusted age. She weighs around 8 pounds and is 3 weeks adjusted age (3 months, 3 weeks real age). She is wearing newborn-sized clothes now and I am eagerly awaiting the day she can fit into her vast collection of 0-3's.

When people ask how old she is, I tell them her real age, then mention that she was a preemie.

My 28 weeker is 2 1/2 and NO ONE believes she was a preemie. She is off the growth chart for her height and about average for her weight. On her first birthday she was 18lbs, still small but catching up. I'd say she started to hit the other side of the growth chart at 18 months and never looked back! My son is catching up a little faster than her. I think he might be a 'normal' size by his first birthday. I've never told people my kids' adjusted age when they ask. If they make a comment about their size, I just mention their birth weight! Of course, there was one lady that told me 3lbs 5oz was a good size baby...

3lb 5oz for a term baby? jeez thats a rough comment!! I hate women who moan about wanting to go early because they dont want to deliver a 'big' baby! But for a 28 or even 30 weeker that is good though, maybe thats what she meant. Thats great they have both caught up well

Yeah, the lady was like 38 weeks pregnant and she was saying that was a good weight for a term baby. I think she was just being snooty but I have no idea why. I know what you mean, I'd give anything to deliver a big baby! My brother was 10lbs 15oz and I'd take that over 2 or 3 lbs any da!y! I've seen women trying to use castor oil and walking and anything else they can think of as early as 30 weeks. On another pregnancy forum, a woman asked if her doctor would take the baby early because she 'just couldn't handle the stress of being pregnant any longer'! She was 28 weeks! I told her she was nuts. She just said why was it such a big deal if the medical staff could handle it. Some people are so ignorant. My friends daughter was born at 28 weeks and she died at 4 days old. Nothing is ever guaranteed. I've been very lucky though, and I'll always be grateful for that.

lol i seem to be stalking you today   Oh i know, i hate all these stupid women and their ignorant comments, if only they had the slightest idea what its really like! Its not actually the medical staff who 'deal' with it though, its the babies and the parents - we are the ones who live with the consequences long after our babies are born. I can understand wanting to be done once you are past a certain stage though (i was in a huge amount of pain early on), but i really grieved for the loss of my pregnancy and felt it was taken from metoo soon. Especially knowing how much brain development and stuff occurs after 36 weeks, would defo make me want to make it to term next time!!
