Weaning from bottle

posted 14th Jul '12
Yeah, I'm being a post whore tonight.

My daughter is almost two. She still drinks a bottle of water at nap and bed time. How in the hell do I break her from it? I have tried a few times and she just throws a smurf fit. And a few days ago, she just started chewing straight through the nipples...

Cold turkey, Momma. That is about all you can do from my experience if the water didn't make her stop. That is how I got my daughter to stop, giving her water, then cold turkey....

Ahhh. Okay. I have just been giving it back to her after screaming for ten minutes. But this is getting insane. And I have to wash sheets all the time because she pees through. And the bottles leak everywhere!!

We took those away. Now she just drinks from rimmed cups!

Maybe let her have 1/2 or 1/4 cup of water out of a rimmed cup before nap/bed time and go from there?

Either that or cold turkey like the other mama said.

On both of my daughters first birthday we took them away. We never really had a problem with it. Just don't give into the crying, if it helps, throw all the bottles away.

I understand the screaming. A few nights of it and hopefully she won't be bothered by it. Maybe give her a drink or two of water from her cup prior. Does she have a favorite book or toy you can replace the bottle?

well if she's only drinking water in it, she does better than my cousin's daughter. She will only drink milk and has to have it all day every day, will be 2 in November. I went cold turkey the day after my son turned 1 year old, that's when he had his last bottle. But it's harder if they depend on it to sleep. My son never slept with it, so it was probably easier for him. I'd still go cold turkey though!

I stopped completely with my son cold turkey. It took a while before he could calm down and realize there is no more bottle lol but it worked it after a few days---although with him was juice or milk so it was a lot harder for him to adjust to just water and without his bottle. I threw them out the moment I decided that it was time for him to stop drinking out of them. I do keep a bottle of water or a cup of water on the night table though and it's all he drinks at night.
