Splitting tips: Do you think its right?

posted 14th Jul '12
My sisterinlaw went job hunting yesterday and one placed she stopped at was a mexican restaurant, where they split tips, meaning at the end of the night everyone puts their tips together and it gets split into equal amounts but she isn't sure that she likes that (but is still gonna take the job anyways bc she really needs one) She thinks that it shouldn't be that way bc your tip is what you earn based on your service to the customers, what if she recieves good tips bc she is giving good service while another waiter/waitress is recieving crappy tips but its bc they are giving crappy service,so they should only get what they earn. But the mangaer does this splitting tips thing because it seems fair that everyone is making the exact same amount money, what do you think?

I don't think that is right at all. She earned her tips.

I split tips at dunkin donuts, but we didn't "wait" on people.

They do that at TGIF too. It sucks unless you are a smurffy server. And then the hostess gets a fair tip out too. I wouldn't want a job like that if I could help it though.

I only think its fair if it's like a tip jar on the counter thing. But an individual tip should o to the person it was intended for.

Do they base it off of how many tables you worked, or how big your tables are, or how long you had to work one table, or how long of a shift you worked? because its not fair if you worked 5 big tables all night, and someone else worked 20 small tables, and you worked 8 hours and they worked 6.

I think that everyone gets the same amount of tables and if somone gets off earlier, then right before they leave, they all split their tips then and then again later.

thats how it is in most resturants, and other places?!
at the casino, dealers, slot attendants, etc all put their tips together and split them too, its not about fairness its about your job.

it does probably help when someone stiffs you a tip, or you get jipped on one. but it does suck when you get an awesome tip. but I would assume it would all even out. it probably helps keep the competition down in the workplace, making a more pleasant place to work.

Well in a small slight way I do see how its kinda fair but then again, I have worked in restaurants as a waitress for years and a lot of customers give tips based on service,so why should I have to spilt my tips when I am working very hard to give good service (even to those coustomers that are annoying as hell) while another waiter/waitress is a slacker and doesnt give a damn about the customers and knows its okay not care bc everyone is gonna make the same.

I've never heard of a resteraunt splitting tips like this. I've worked in a dozen restreaunts and servers never had to split tips

The only thing they had to do is give 5% or 10% for the busboy and hostess to split.

It seems counterintuitive IMO, what makes a waitress want to preform better, there is benefit to it.

Quite a few places around here split tips, and I think it's a smurffy policy.
