I'd have to agree. I personally wouldn't want to allow my child to be miserable and physically ill by keeping a pet, I would have to find a different home for the pet(s), as well.
My mother had a Siberian husky for a good number of years before I was born. From what she told me, they were as thick as thieves before she got into some...trouble (as I'd like to leave that as) and left her (the dog) with a friend. She told me that if she still had her at the time I was born, she would have to give her away; the dog was very protective as well as possessive of my mother, and would growl and become defensive around anyone who passed by them during a walk or any person who visited them. According to my mom, Kiya wouldn't hesitate to bite at times, and she would have been afraid that I could be in danger because of this if she became possessive and jealous of the relationship between myself and my mom. My mother didn't seem skeptical of the possibility that I could have been no exception to Kiya's (the dog's name) list of potential threats. So she would have chosen me over her beloved pet dog.
Which I'm sure would have been painful choice of action for her to make...
So, not at all related to allergies, true. But the similarity of this story/example may still be relevant, perhaps?
I wish you the best with your decision, OP
