Male vs. Female Perpetrators in Sex Crimes

posted 11th May
For one of my classes this semester we had to run a group experment as part of our grades for the class. My group decided to see if male or female teachers who commited sex crimes would be more likely to get a harsher punishment. We found, with statistical significance (.02% chance that our results would have happened on accident), that people would be more inclinded to punish a male perpetrator than a female perpetrator more harshly.

What I found especially interesting was that no one in the male perpetrator group thought that they should teach again, but in a female perpetrator group there were several people who thought she should only be given minimal time off of teaching.

What do you think?

Sounds about what I would have expected.

Personally, I think the punishment should be for the act, not the sex of the person who committed said act.

Typical sexism.

Yeah, we expected it. I think that sex crimes should have mandatory sentances placed on them so that sex offenders' sex never comes into question during the sentancing phase.

I'm reminded of that blond teacher who was in the news a while back who's defence attorney said she was "too pretty" to go to jail. I thought that was a crock. If she had been a male the book would have been thrown at her.

I agree. When people see an older woman messing with a younger man they think "Oh sweet yeah that's awesome he's bagged him al older broad" (I'm using terms I've heard other men use here). But when it's a man with a younger girl they're like "Oh that pervert that is sick omg ew" etc. Very double standardish. Personally, Idc if you're male or female. I agree there should be a mandatory minimum sentencing for ALL sex crimes, and then go up from there.

I think what also may contribute to this is that males are less likely to report being with an older woman and so it seems like females are less likely to do it so they deserve special treatment when it does happen.

Or on the flip side since females are viewed as more vulnerable that the victim could actually be portrayed as the perpetrator and taking advantage of the teacher instead of the other way around.

I am not a supporter of mandatory sentences for any crime. I feel like it ties the Judge's hands in handing down a decision. To me mandatory sentences tend to see everything in black & white and that's not real life. In real life there are many more gray areas.

I think we live in s sexist world of hypocracy (I'm guilty of it too....in fact - I believe every woman should be feminine and it's more important for a woman to look good instead of the man.....it's the way I was raised to think anyway) and I think that a crime is a crime regardless of who commits it. The ONLY time it would differ is if a minor committed the crime - they would most likely be indicted for it in a much less harsher way than that of an adult.

I had an employer when I worked for Wendys when I was 19 in Ohio who constantly hit on me, offered a raise for sex (of course I didn't do it!), used to grope me in the freezer at that store.....so I said something and had him fired......but had a woman done that to him (if it bothered him, that is), she wouldn't have gotten fired and would have just had to take a sexual harrassment course......

I don't agree with the seperation of sexes when it comes to legal matters.

I can see that, but a mandatory minimum sentance should be in place. I mean, in one case (for the same crime) a woman can get off on house aresst and minimum probation but a man ends up getting 15 years. There's no "fair" in that.

It is because men & women(for the most part)view sex very differently. Women associate it with love-especially when they are young and men see it as a conquest.

I am not saying that agree with women getting a lighter sentence but I can understand how it happens. Teenage boys and teenage girls view sex and relationships very differently. And I personally feel that there is a huge difference between having sex with a 12 or 13 year old compared to a 16 year old. Both would be considered sex with a minor in most states and judically there would not be a difference.

I have been interested in sex crimes for quite a while and I am debating whether I should work with sex offenders or work with inmates in prison that struggle with AODA issues. From all the types of sex crimes that I have read about men ALWAYS seem to have harsher punishments then women. I think it is absolutely ridiculous. When it comes to crime, especially sex crimes men AND women should be punished equally.

Exactly my though!
What about when a 17 year old boy has consensual sex with a 15 yr old girl and he is charged with rape? IMO that is very unjust.

What do you think?

I agree with C. Punish the act, not the gender.

I think it has to do a lot with people feeling that a man can do greater physical harm to a girl with his penis. I dunno. I find all pedophiles disgusting creatures that should be slaughtered like diseased livestock.

Perfect example of why mandatory sentences are unjust.
