Autism question....

posted 12th Jul '12
Hi ladies..
I posted before about my concerns for my friends 3 yr old son. I mentioned he basically babbles and only says some understandable words, makes a humming sound when he's upset, etc.... I was watching him more this a.m. and noticed he flaps his arms when he's excited or upset. And, does the humming noise AND flaps his arms when he's upset. He seems to want to play alone instead of playing with my 3 and 5 yr old boys. He's also very pigeon-toed.....I Googled this all and autism came up a lot. Do you think its possible he has a form of this? I'm no doctor...but.... He seems to function well otherwise.... I know a lot of you will say to speak to his mother about it but I think she would get pissed!   She is a nurse so you'd think maybe she already has concerns....? I don't know. SO, for you ladies that know autism and it's symptoms, do you think this is probably nothing or possibly autism? TIA!

sounds like there are some definite red flags there, but I think it's best to let his parents and pedi address it.

if he is autistic, it won't take much longer for it to become evident......even if they are in denial.

My little brother didn't really talk until he was 3 1/2, but he had to have the skin on the bottom of his tongue cut because it held his tongue down. and he always preferred to play by himself or with only me, he would shun our cousins and not want anything to do with them. I don't remember if he made arm flapping movements though. But we recently found out he has a very mild form of autism. [not sure which type of autism, it wasn't really discussed with me I just know he has it.]

i agree w/this....its sad that the child may not get the early help he needs if ASD is the issue but w/the symptoms u mentioned denial has to come into play(exspecailly if the mom is a nurse)
