Finally!

Tomorrow my DS has his big appt to get his AUG Comm device process started. I am so excited for MK to have a voice!!

What's an AUG Comm device?

AUG comm is another word for AAC. Augmentative and alternate communication device. It's an electronic that has words/symbols he will push in sequence and then will speak that sentence out loud. He uses sign right now, but an AUG Comm device is easier for others to communicate with him- there's not a language barrier in the way. As he gets older we will unlock other features.. so he can type to talk or do simple abbreviations similar to texting with the the end result being spoken out loud.

I'll update or post a thread in the next day or two. We have to go to a children's hospital farther away than usual, as they have the best program available in the state. It's going to take 2.5 hrs to get there, 3 hr appt and the trip home. Smurf. I have to leave her in 5 hours.

Copy and pasted from my other thread with what happened today.
Turns out his SLP wasn't properly preparing him or me for what was supposed to be happening to get ready for this appt... So I got sent home with 'homework' so to speak to prepare him for his next appt. I'm feeling really good about this SLP and what our plan is. I'm going to focus on everything she told me, and wait for her paperwork in the mail. I am thrilled with the tools she provided us with. Tomorrow MK has OT and at that time I was going to take a moment to speak with his current SLP the way things seem to be headed I'm going to see about discharging him for the summer, focus on our current goals(!) and wait for school to start up and our name to come back around on the wait list, so when we are able to start trialing in 3 months for the device.
The SLP we saw today was really excited about how eager he is to interact and all the tone inflections with his noises and that he's so engaged with play and prompting and ques. So she is in agreement he needs a device and we just have to get us trained. I'm talking in circles. It's been a long day. I hope you all were able to get what I'm trying to express.
