I honestly feel like I've missed a very important part of math learning! Lol.
I feel cheated!. It would be like learning English but forgetting to teach me the puncuation.
I wonder if I could sue them (I wish)

To me it feels like 90% of my elementary school knowledge was gained by teaching and not in actual elementary school. You are not the only one!

I was wondering how I got to the age of 32 without needing to know this.... then I remembered that most real world math problems don't need all the fancy things we're taught in school and college anyway hehehehe.

Order of Operations - BODMAS

Operations

"Operations" mean things like add, subtract, multiply, divide, squaring, etc. If it isn't a number it is probably an operation.
But, when you see something like...
7 + (6 × 52 + 3)
... what part should you calculate first?

Start at the left and go to the right?
Or go from right to left?
Calculate them in the wrong order, and you will get a wrong answer !
So, long ago people agreed to follow rules when doing calculations, and they are:
Order of Operations

Do things in Brackets First. Example:
6 × (5 + 3)=6 × 8=
48
6 × (5 + 3) =30 + 3=
33(wrong)

Exponents (Powers, Roots) before Multiply, Divide, Add or Subtract. Example:
5 × 22=5 × 4=
20
5 × 22=102=
100(wrong)

Multiply or Divide before you Add or Subtract. Example:
2 + 5 × 3=2 + 15=
17
2 + 5 × 3 =7 × 3=
21(wrong)

Otherwise just go left to right. Example:
30 ÷ 5 × 3 =6 × 3=
18
30 ÷ 5 × 3 =30 ÷ 15=
2(wrong)
How Do I Remember It All ... ? BODMAS !

BBrackets first

OOrders (ie Powers and Square Roots, etc.)

DMDivision and Multiplication (left-to-right)

ASAddition and Subtraction (left-to-right)

Just to follow up. Almost all of my British Facebook friends got 1 for their answer. It seems they also believed that while brackets must come first, everything else should be read left to right. From my very, very informal observation and inadequate sample size I have come to the conclusion that while order of operations is taught in both countries, in the US too much emphasis is placed on order while not enough attention to recognizing operations with equal priority. In the UK the opposite is true and not enough emphasis is placed on order, giving everything after brackets equal priority. I don't know why but this whole thing has been so fascinating to me!

This is what I learned as well.

Answer is 4.

It is slightly concerning that the universal language of math is not so universal lol!

Hi All

in the laws of BODMAS or PEMDAS, Addition will always fall before Subtraction so the correct answer must be 2. 7-4+3x0+1 =7-4+0+1 = 7-5= 2

If BEDMAS (American here, never taught it & never struggle with math in HS or college) is ALWAYS correct explain this to me...

If I am having a wedding...and I have gotten quotes for drinks at $3 per person & dinner at $10 per person & plan to have 100 guests. Why then when I add I get these answers using BEDMAS:

3 + 10 x 100 = 1,003
10 + 3 x 100 = 310

How are either of those figures correct when I can use left to right & get this:
3 + 10 x 100 = 1,300
10 + 3 x 100 = 1,300
Which for all practical purposes IS the right answer for what I need to pay?

In my day - we were taught to do brackets first & to put into brackets anything that should be done first. So if I were told to translate a word problem into a mathematical equation in my era I would write (3+10)100= 1,300 according to how they would tell me write the expression & we never used x anyway - so I was confused even by that as I thought initially it would be a variable...so I was looking at first glance to find an x=? answer LOL I haven't seen an X to signify multiplication since I was in 7th grade.

And I can assure you that it wasn't due to me not paying attention - I had a 4.0. They were not teaching it. And no I won't give my exact age. ;)

And yes - I have done absolutely fine without this knowledge. When I get a chance I'll ask Dh though because he went on to higher math than me (engineering) and he took classes more recently as well.

yeah, that's how we were taught too. To put the first two numbers in parenthesis...

The equation is not written correctly without the parentheses. If you put the addition before the multiplication in the equation then you must include parentheses in order to make it correct. So I'm not sure what your point is?

Addition does not always occur before subtraction. It's whichever appears first in the equation. The correct answer is 4.
