Mashed potatoes recipe

posted 10th Jul '12
The one I'm going to use tonight calls for cream, which I dont have and cant get to the store. Can I sub milk? Should I use less milk than what the recipe calls for since its thinner or should I use more?

It calls for 1/2 cup

I would add the milk slowly until it was the consistency you're looking for. Mashed potatoes are also good using sour cream instead of milk. Yummy.

I always use milk lol. And I don't measure it, I just go off how many potatoes I have lol.

Are you fixing instant or actual potatoes?

Milk is fine, if anything they will be a little less creamy.

I do mine with milk and sour cream, but if I don't have sour cream then just milk. They always turn out good either way, just a little creamier with sour cream.

The heavier the milk the better because its more resistant to curdling but any milk will do. Adding cold milk to hot/wet potatoes can give you gummy potatoes, depending on the type of potato so I let them dry out a little in the strainer, put them back in the pot- then add warm milk. then i season with the butter, salt etc.

Use milk and sour cream. I agree with warming your milk first.

I always do milk, sour cream, butter and either chives or garlic.
