Do the MTV shows glamourize teen pregnancy?

posted 10th Jul '12
I am not sure how I feel about it. On one hand, the lives of most of the moms really suck. Deadbeat dads, no money, no education, unsupportive families, inability to parent and have a social life with their former friends---all of it. It sucks.

Yet these women are being paid anywhere from $5000 to six figures to do these shows. They're on magazine covers. Are they pop culture icons or are they just subjects of a documentary?

I am honestly torn. But I don't think I'd want to get pregnant because I saw the show or something either.

I think the fact that they have a possibility of getting on tv makes teens think its much more acceptable to get pregnant at their age than it actually is, if that makes any sense? Maybe they think 'I'm not going to use a condom or any BC because if I DO end up preggo I could always shoot an email to MTV." but I don't think that it makes them actually TTC or anything. Unless they are incredibly stupid

I think that show is a bunch of bullsmurf! I know how it is to be a teen mom and i never get to go on vacation, move across the country, get a place by myself or be seen in a different car every month.I wish it was that easy! It took me forever to get my own place and car and there both pieces of smurf because i actually did it on my own!  that shows just for the baby momma drama lol

True, teen pregnancy used to be so much more taboo than it seems to be now.

True also--birth rate of babies to teenagers is the lowest it's been in 70 years (reason = abortion, not less sex imo). SO it could be than the actual cautionary tale is getting through to people. In a way.

3 of Jenelle's friends became pregnant. Some girls in the town look up to her and think she has it all (actual quote from a girl in her high school lmao).

And we know Jenelle is an absolute stinking genius, so her friends must be too.

I don't really believe that teen mom glamourizes the issue of teen pregnancy.

I also don't believe their lives are that realistic. I believe it does show their trials and successes. Which might be attractive to some girls.

But it really depends on their individual circumstances and personality of the people watching the show..

I don't know about "glamourize", but I don't think mtv's Teen Mom sustains a strong focus on the tremendous difficulties and obstacles that come with teen pregnancy as they originally intended.
From my perspective, the main problems highlighted in both seasons seem to be child custody issues, tension between exes, lunatic mothers, domestic violence and other attributes that I personally feel aren't the closest to portraying the obstacles teen mothers commonly face. KWIM?

I'd say they make teen pregnancy seem more "okay".

However, they do not glamourize it, IMO. The dads are almost always douche bags and the girls always end up broke or upset or fighting or in trouble with the law or something.

I'd say, in reality, teen pregnancy is much less dramatic lol. I'd say they dramatize it, rather than glamourize it.

Exactly what I tried to explain.
I agree!

I don't think MTV themselves is trying to glamorize it, but some teens will perceive a glamorized false reality of it. They think "oh if I get pregnant I could be on mtv, get paid thousands of dollars and do whatever I want like move across country, get a brand new car, afford to throw my kid in daycare, etc."
I'm sure if they showed more of the real struggles a teen would go through raising a child (WITHOUT the mtv paycheck) it'd be a lot different.
