Smoking during pregnancy...

posted 10th Jul '12
I'm sure that this has been hashed out on here many times, but it's late and I would like to know everyones opinions (yes, inspired by the now deleted vomiting blood thread)..

I have a friend that smoked cigarettes all through her pregnancy and claimed that her Doctor said it would be harmful to her, and cause worse problems from withdrawl if she stopped smoking.

Do you think it's justifiable to smoke cigarettes while pregnant? Do you think it's selfish to continute smoking?

Thoughts on the subject?

I think it is selfish & wrong, yes. Very bad for the growing fetus. I feel like a lot of times people just use it as an excuse, don't bother cutting down, nada. What a load of smurf.

I think it is wrong and quit the day I found out I was pregnant and haven't since. A lot of my friends smoked during pregnancy and were to selfish to quit. But their doctors did tell them past a certain time in their pregnancy that quiting cold turkey would be harmful for the baby but that they could still gradually quit.

exactly. nobody says that, they just say, "well smoking cold turkey would be so much worse for me," okay then cut down...?

I feel the same way basically. I get addictions, how it can be hard to quit. I had a pretty serious caffiene addiction when I got pregnant with my first son, but I stopped because it's not good at all for the baby. My friend who smoked said her baby was born perfectly healthy..etc but now is having developmental issues (which I'm not blaming on smoking), but who knows what it could cause on down the road?

Right then excuse it if their baby is "healthy" at birth. If you don't care about you at least care about your kid kwim

even if someone who smokes has a 'perfectly good baby,' it's like... okay, well who knows if your baby might have been even healthier or smarter if you didn't smoke at all...?

I don't think it's ever justifiable to smoke during pregnancy.
If you really can't quit, so be it, that's your decision and your (and your fetus's life).
However, it's still YOUR decision, the decision you are making to continue smoking and you need to take that responsibility.

And no, I do not think it is ever more beneficial to continue smoking versus stopping either gradually or cold turkey, while pregnant.

(and by "you", I mean "you in general" of course)

I smoked weed heavily and black and milds. It was tough mentally to quit but my child was more important to me and I feel better for doing it.

Personally i think a smoker should try to give up during pregnancy, Or at least reduce the amount they smoke, Because it CAN be harmful, Although it doesn't mean it will be, And some people figure it's worth the risk because they know of people who have smoked and the baby was ok, But It's the luck of the draw really, Some people smoke heavily and have no complications for bub, Others smoke a little and end up with severe complications and permanent damage to bub, So i say Better safe than sorry.

I also feel like if you can't make such a small sacrafice for the benefit of your child, What are you doing having one?

Yes its selfish and wrong.

I must say however I do not think these mothers want to harm their babies I think they are just in complete denial or ignorant of how bad it is. No pregnant women whose chosen to keep her embryo would want to harm her child. It must be some kind of self preserving denial.

Even if it is self preserving denial it is completely selfish.

I smoked and when I found out I was going to "cut down" for half a day I had 1 cigarette then I walked into my biological anthropology lecture and it was on growth and osteology - she spoke for a while about fetal development and smoking and there was this giant picture of the different developments on the screen. I walked out of the lecture chucked all smoking parafanalia away and never looked back.
Its just not worth it, the stress you feel is very like the irritability you feel in the first trimester anyway. Your baby is a huge motivator and its just not worth the risk

Its sad that you're put in this situation with your friend smoking, maybe you could explain what she is actually doing to her baby when she's smoking (stopping the flow of oxygen) babies are at risk of sids after birth because of a mothers smoking they are also at risk of Preemie birth and low birth weight both of which are very risky.

my doctor told me to not stop , 3 obs have ... after they saw me withdraw in person... the did say TO .......to cut down .. and cut down and cut down LOL ... with my personal addiction I withdraw with physical symptoms but I am not happy I smoke .. I have tried to quit ... I honestly can not seem to, I got down to 4 a day with my first son........as far as people saying I am selfish .. it has nothing to do with that ... I refuse to take a medicine that could also hurt the baby ... I know 4 kids later smoking has not caused them any issue .. BUT I also know that it can....Its not like im like smurf my baby and light up ... its the constant stuggle, shakes , throwing up , cramps that I cant get over ..... I do not smoke weed , or drink or barely take any meds, and trust me I catch hell everyday .......

yea so they said not to STOP but they did say to cut down & cut down. Exactly.

& that is good for you that you cut down. Honestly. Idk how much you were smoking to begin w/ but making an effort is great.
