Allergic to lanolin

posted 9th Jul '12
I planned to BF with my son and had a terrible experience. It was super painful and come to find out I am allergic to lanolin. Sometimes after feeding him my boob would get chafed and I tried using lanolin and it only made the pain worse, almost like putting rubbing alcohol on an open cut. I think this was one of the main reasons I gave up and switched to formula but this time around I am bound and determined to stick with it. Anyway, my question is.. if you're allergic to lanolin cream is there anything else you can do/use to ease the pain of BF? TIA.

Vasoline or Aquaphor if that's how you spell it I think you might have to wipe it completely off before the baby nurses km not sure. Hopefully you find something that works for you.

There are a ton of different products. I used a natural avocado oil on mine. Look in the whole foods/product section in your local store.

Do you have the option of not covering up after nursing? Sometimes just rubbing some BM on my nipples and letting them air dry really helped. If not, my mom said she used vaseline, and she just had to wipe it off everytime she was going to nurse.

We had a lot of latching issues so I think that was part of the pain factor. I'm hoping this time around won't be as painful! I never tried just rubbing milk on it but will this time. Thanks friend

It works amazing. As soon as you have her just get in the habit of letting your nipples air dry with some milk on them. If you use any cream put it on after they are dry.

Personally I never used Lanolin!

All I did was express some milk, rub it on my nipple before feeding and after feedings. Then I let my boobs air dry. I was topless (or at the very least, bra-less) for probably the first 2 months of Danika's life, I'm not going to lie.

I wouldn't do vaseline. You really just don't want your baby ingesting petroleum products.

Try expressing milk, if it's still super painful take some ibuprophen.

For latching, which can cause it (though getting cracked nipples at first is normal for most as you're learning and your nipples are toughening up) make sure you squish the nipple down so it's kind of like a hamburger and put as much into your baby's mouth as you possibly can. You should not have too much of your areola showing when your baby is latched.

I was just reading about this. JoJo never had the whole thing in his mouth like the pictures in my pregnancy book. I really didn't know much about BF, just a little from the nurse in the hospital but I was pretty much clueless. This time around I'm doing my research! I really think I can do it this time. Definitely investing in a pump as well.
thanks for the feedback mayne

All I can say is that you will have to dedicate the first six weeks of your baby's life to learning breastfeeding. It's quite literally like being pregnant all over again with all of the questions and hurdles and complications. You've really gotta prepare for how frustrating it can be, and as long as you're aware that it's not a cake walk, you'll do fine.

Also, BF'd babies are MUCH smaller than FF babies for at least the first month to two months most of the time. With a bottle, it's easier to want them to finish it, with a breast they are burning calories while eating, they are more likely to stop eating when they are not hungry (as opposed to a bottle where they stop eating when they are full.)

I know Jo Jo was a bigger baby, so I just wanted to let you know that. Most women freak out about their babies being a little bit on the small side with breastfeeding. It isn't because you are inadequate or because you aren't making enough milk like most docs will have you believe. If you ever have questions you know I will help you! Even if you're so frustrated that you want to call me every bad name you can think of, I will help you with nursing, I'm a big advocate and I have helped a lot of friends IRL and on BG.

Thanks a lot. Seriously <3
I really think I'm going to need all the support I can get. I have a feeling I'm not going to get much from my family. Earlier this evening we went to the store and I started looking at the pumps they had and was showing them to Josh. He said "why don't you look into renting one from the hospital instead of spending $250+ on something that may not work out".. and then we had a conversation about it. He said that it's not that he doesn't think I can do it, he just "knows I lack will power" which kind of made me upset. The way I look at it, I am a VERY different person than I was with my first pregnancy and when JoJo was a baby. I didn't have a lot of will power back then and I admit I easily gave up on BF. But this time I know I want it and I really want this to work out. I've been doing my research and looked up the number to the hospital to take a breast feeding course there, gonna call tomorrow. I want this as bad as I wanted to not be fat anymore. It's just really important to me and I hope I can do it.
