Kidney pain
posted 9th Jul '12
Ive got pain in both sides between my ribs and hip bone and goes around into my back, it comes and goes all day, everyday for the last couple weeks.
I mentioned to my doctor yesterday and she had me stand up and do some stretches, touch my toes and asked if there was pain, there wasn't so I explained again that it come and goes. I pee normaly, no burning or discomfort but I am really thirsty all of the time. I end up making myself nauseous from how often I am sculling bottles of water.
She sent me to pathology for a couple urine tests and to do all the antenatal screening early (ill have to do it again at 11 weeks) because of the pain but she doesn't know what it is.
Anyone had this problem?

Could it be kidney stones? I've been having back pain and blood in my urine with no infection and I passed two kidney stones within a week of each other. It's always a possibility!

I don't know, I've never had stones as far as I know.
I don't think I've got blood in my urine, last week I had a tiny bit of blood but no idea if it was actually in my pee.
Does passing them hurt? Lol just wondering if I'd know if it happened.

Lol it all depends on size! Mine were huge. :/ The back pain is from them traveling to your bladder. After that, you'd feel burning when you pee. Not all the time like a uti, just when its coming out. It's not pleasant. They say its about the same as labor if not worse, but to me, I don't think it was THAT bad. I've never had a baby so of course I don't know for sure, but if that's how bad labor will be I'll do just fine lol.
Anyways, just throwing out the possibility! It's common to get them during pregnancy. It could be just ligament pain. But if you still don't feel well go back to Dr. Good luck hun! X

I had horrible kidney and flank pain with my second pregnancy. I ended up with a kidney infection but it was caused by my placenta crushing my ureter tubes. Those tubes are what connect your kidneys to your bladder. It was mostly on my right side but after several ER visits in excruciating pain they did an ultrasound of only my kidneys and found that the placenta and baby were sitting directly on top of the tubes. They talked about putting stints in to keep the tubes open but only if it was absolutely necessary. They did not end up doing this but kept me on an antibiotic for the duration of my pregnancy to prevent infection. It may be something to bring up and see if they will ultrasound your kidneys just to make sure there isn't an obstruction. Kidney pain is some of the worst pain I've ever had, I hope you get relief soon.

Thanks, maybe it is stones then because I don't have any problems peeing lol it's just the pain in my sides and back so far but can it take over 2 weeks for them to pass?
Melanie did you have any burning with your pee from your infection?
It does remind me of the start of my back labor actually but not that bad. I described it to the doctor as worse than my period pain and I have really painful periods.
It's not round ligament, I'm 6 weeks so the pain is way too high to be from my uterus and everything's too small to be crushing anything yet lol
I have my next ultrasound next Tuesday so I'll ask her if she can look at my kidneys.
I see the doctor tomorrow afternoon so hopefully she'll have my urine and blood tests back, maybe they'll have some answers and I'll ask her about stones.
Thanks so much to both of you!

Your doctor needs to do an oltra sound in ypur kidneys. I had the same thing back in may. They dod an oltra sound and said my roght kidney was swollen. I would drink lots of water and thought it would help. But I it wasnt cuz of that. They said when i would pee i would nt empty out my bladder and soo the left over pee tgay did stay in my bladder would go back up in my kidney and made it swell up. They said if i didnt go pee every 2 hours then they would have to put a cathadure in fpr the rest of my pregnancy. I did wat they told me and i only drink 4lots glasses of wat at least or a lil more and im soo much better. Also i didnt have any burning or anything when i peed and i drank lots of water that would make me sick

I went to the doctor because a couple hours ago the pain got that bad that I was shaking and sweaty.
The dr told me its normal. Go home and take paracetamol because I'm not bleeding so there's nothing to worry about.
Im pretty upset now, he completely brushed me off

Not cool at all... My dr did that to me and still does occasionally. Like he doesnt take me seriously. I however had lots of blood in my urine and he said nothing about it. I passed 2 kidney stones a week after he did that. Not saying thats what u have, just saying its not always "nothing."
If you still don't feel good later, go to ob triage and demand some tests. You know your body better than anyone.
